easy - compact
I was skeptical - didn't see perfect reviews. I'm giving it a perfect review. Set up quickly! no disappointing malfunctions during install. Scan was clear and smooth. Super easy. This is my second feeder. The first feeder I ordered years ago started to get weird, as it scanned a few hazy lines during the feed. Running diagnostics etc. never resolved the lines. Tossed it after getting this one - nothing lasts forever (?) It's new, no issues - crossing my fingers it will last many years like the first one. If you need to scan a document from time to time or receipts (super small business things) I find it helpful that I can hide it away behind the computer monitor when I'm not using it. What a great idea that someone thought of this small scanner! I don't need anything huge. The printer has one, and the scanner was always a dysfunction. Cheap all in one machines have failed at true -"all in one". When you are tight on space you don't want tons of bulky junk!

Works right out of the box
Working from home I need the ability to scan forms to send to co-workers for job completion. Normally I would take a picture with my phone and then email from there. However, that was just taking to long and the quality was gone in the document. I received the Epson DS-70 today downloaded the software, plugged in the device via the USB cable provided, adjusted the settings for the image quality and was well on my way to scanning the documents I have been waiting to send. This is a small unit but handles the documents well. It is a single document scanner so you have to feed through one page at a time. Not a deal breaker due to the fact that you can add multiple pages before finishing the job. It does not perform like your more expensive table top scanners but this is a portable scanner and an inexpensive one at that so think of it as a simple machine with no frills. It is not a duplex scanner so if your documents are two sided you will have to scan both sides one at a time (again no big deal). If you are looking for an inexpensive scanner that is ready to go then I would recommend this scanner.

Setup a Pain - Use a Protective Cover When Scanning!
Overall, I am happy with this scanner. We purchased it for use during remote learning as we need to submit our work at the end of the day. However, there were a few things I noted about this scanner that are useful to know. - Only scan printed documents or assignments done in pencil unless you have a scanning cover sheet or want to run the maintenance with a wet sheet. - The black and white scanning is very limited (see the attached comparison between greyscale, black and white and color) - Setup is a bit of work and is all online; no software installation disc is included - The scanner needs to be plugged in before you start the software for scanning. You cannot scan without this software and if you plug in the scanner after you start the software it will not work. - It is small and spacious but this means it cannot scan anything wider than a single 8" paper, one sided. You can add more pages with the software though, so this doesn't pose much of a problem for me. - It continues to scan no matter how long or short the document is. This is so useful! Overall this scanner is perfect for our remote learning needs. I would recommend it, just know that you need a clear cover sheet for your scanning if anything besides pencil is used and you might have some difficulty downloading the software. They do offer tech support though that is very helpful.

Perfect for traveling
Scanner works well with software from the Epsom website. Compact, fits in a backpack, and seems to be a good traveling companion. I’ve dropped it several times and it still works great! Excellent resolution for it’s size and price.

Not so good
There are multiple problems with this scanner. Most of them relate to the software so there's a remote chance that it will be fixed in the future. Using alternate scanning software may help avoid some of the problems as well. The one problem that definitely cannot be fixed with software is the width of the scanner opening - it is too narrow for some of the letter/legal sheets out there. 75-90% of the sheets are ok but the ones on the wider side of the spec tolerances are too wide to fit. The major software issues: 1. The scanner is really sensitive to the quality of the USB cable and sometimes the connection between the computer and the scanner will fail. The real problem here is that the software is unable to reconnect to the scanner. The sure way to restore the connection is to restart the computer. I was sometimes able to avoid that by killing the scanner processes from task manager and disconnecting/reconnecting the scanner but that does not work every time. And if you were scanning multiple sheets you would not be able to save any - you would need to rescan the whole batch. Good USB connection seems to avoid this specific problem. 2. Sometimes the software gets stuck in scanning mode even though scanner is not scanning. Even if you are able to cancel current scan you lose the everything that was scanned in that batch. If you have to kill the process - you lose obviously lose the whole batch as well. 3. Processing of the images is also unstable. For example, if you need to rotate the multiple images after the scan and you select them all at once there's a good chance the software will crash. Even if it doesn't it may wipe some of the images it was processing - you will see their placeholder but any attempt to do anything with them (including saving) will produce an error. Trying to rotate images in smaller sets seem to be more reliable but the crush/corruption still a possibility. Plus there's a plethora of smaller annoyances. For example the template for the names of the files is has pretty short length limit necessitating additional renaming later, trying to replace part of the template by selecting it and pasting from clipboard does not delete the original selected text, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

Great scanner!
It does a great job for being such a small, compact scanner. I have lost the cleaning pieces though so I now have to figure out how to clean. But I love this thing!
