Beautifully Illustrated Collection of Tiny Places
Micro Living, by Derek Diedricksen, is a beautifully illustrated collection of small and tiny places that's fun to flip through and pick up ideas from. I've lived on a narrowboat in the UK for 13 years, so 'unintentionally' have been part of the small living/big freedom way of life for some time, and it has been interesting to see how land-based folk live in tiny places. This book mostly focuses on the US, and reflects a particular and seemingly well developed 'scene'. Tiny houses are clearly big business, and a number of commercial builders, offering a finessed variety of models, are represented here. Mobility of tiny homes is also seen as quite important, so the majority of constructions in the book are based on a trailer-type frame. So, many of the designs are constrained in length, width and height to what can be towed on a road. (I was expecting mostly free-standing structures, tree houses, cabins and such.) This means that most of the micro living spaces are no more than eight and a half feet wide, and any upper floors have very low ceilings -- usually 'crouch down' sleeping lofts accessed by ladders. What I enjoyed most were the small homes with funky interiors, that show off the personality of their owners, and the cleverness of some people in re-cycling and re-purposing different materials and objects. The book also shows well the trade-offs that often need to be made in building a truly small place. The text was a little on the light side for me. I'd have liked to know more about the owners of these micro places and especially how they lived in them. (It's going to be different for each individual or couple.) Sure, that would make the book a third fatter, but I'd be willing to pay a third more for that insight!

Brilliant thank you

Nice book, full of ideas and beautiful pictures. Loved the simple layout. Be aware that this is more of an inspiration bucket than an how-to, which is fine by me. If you're into tiny houses I'd recommend it ^^

I have been researching and pondering tiny homes for the last couple of years, perusing YouTube channels like "Living Big in a Tiny House", joining social media groups and internet forums to discuss Tiny design, and amassing books regarding tiny house design and construction. And I have to say: Derek did a great job with this book! I'm a very tactile person, and I love the formatting found in this book. Not only does each house discussed have a unique design element that is useful, is highlighted by Derek, and then shown clearly with a color photograph, but Derek tries to elicit honest discussion of each home: the pros and the cons of each. I feel this book is a great square-one book for someone interested in tiny homes, as it not only outlines important tiny home restrictions and mantras, but it still has interesting information for someone such as myself, who has already done self-directed research. I wish someone had put this book in my hand two years ago, what a boon that would have been!! HOWEVER, and this is more a comment on amazon kindle formatting rather than the book content itself, but I really hate how much the kindle version dilutes the reading experience of this book. I really wish the Kindle version had a full-page pdf variant, that preserved the original layout of the book. While you will still get the same information with the kindle book, the printed format of the book is by far superior.

A great book about tiny houses needs a lot of pictures. This book delivers on that and doesn't stop there. It's divided into three main sections that group the tiny houses by size categories. There is really something for everyone here and each house is not only depicted via a number of great images, but Deek offers additional details and shows off floor plans of the various tinies. Since tiny houses are often deeply personal creations, Deek showcases the people behind these small structures. I like that since tiny houses are all about the folks that build them or live in them and the choices/tradeoffs they have made in their spaces. In the event that this book kickstarts your own tiny house ambitions, there is a set of plans included to get you started down that path. That's a nice way to round out a rather comprehensive collection of sub 400 square foot tiny structures. Micro Living will give you ideas and you'll pick up on things that you like that others have done. In that way it's a great resource for coming up with your own back of the envelope designs for tiny living. Don't buy it if you think that tiny houses are stupid and a fad that is about to come to an abrupt end. Assuming you don't fall into that category, pop this into your cart. You won't be disappointed.

Deek includes just enough information to be helpful and inspiring without making any aspects of this book boring in any way. Heaps of photos and detailed plans allow you to join the dots in making your own design. Even if you don't happen to like a particular design, there are always one or two features in it that are both cool and thought provoking to use in your own tiny house. This book, his YouTube channel and MicroShelters has given me heaps of ideas in planning our monstrous 49m2 home for my wife and 5 kids. Why live like the rest of the world? Small spaces can be great spaces!
