Based on the story of the great filly who was undefeated until suffering a fatal breakdown in a match race against Foolish Pleasure at Belmont Park in 1975. Only lasting two short seasons on the track, Ruffian was unbeaten through her first ten starts - shattering records at nearly every race. It was the much anticipated 11th race, on July 7, 1975 in front of a packed house at Belmont and a television audience of 18 million viewers, that proved to be her last. Hailed as the battle of the sexes, Ruffian went head-to-head with Kentucky Derby winning colt Foolish Pride, in what became the last match race in professional horse racing. Just short of the one mile marker, Ruffian went down hard with a broken leg, ultimately leaving doctors with no other option than to put the horse to sleep. The next day, she was buried at Belmont and to this day remains the only horse granted that honor. Academy Award nominee Sam Shepard stars in this extraordinary true story of the greatest filly racehorse of all time, Ruffian.. Review: Ruffian movie - Really well done. Gives some insight into the behind the scenes of the racing world. Based on a true story about a great filly and her tragic end. Review: Best - I am a huge fan of Ruffian. Hands down greatest racehorse of all time.

Heart-rending Horse Story
I bought this video because I was an extra, appearing twice, during the movie. I was very impressed with both the movie the cast--especially the leading actor.

I love horses
I watched the televised match race the day that it was run. Ruffian was a magnificent horse and a favorite, second only to Secretariat.

A legend she could have become.
This movies was real good and sad too. It showed how a filly was nearly destined to be one of the best of her kind. And there weren't any putdowns about her like there was Phar Lap or Seabiscuit. She was put in only filly/mare races until her last race when she was to face the fastest colt and she sadly broke one of her legs. She was nearly able to be saved when the vets were able to correct the breakage in/on her leg. They should have put her in a horse sling after surgery so she could be standing. But instead, she was struggling too much and broke another leg and it left them no other option but to put her down. Ruffian's death was very sad. But it did inspire the horse racing industy to not let anymore match races happen. She could have had some great foals if she had lived. Ruffian was a female horse who had all the right conformation and stuff everyone said. She was a great horse while she lived.

Worth it for the extras
I'm like many other reviewers in that I remember watching Ruffian's match race. The beauty of watching her race and the horror of watching her not only breakdown during a race but also refuse to stop racing are indescribable. Did the movie capture that emotion? No. I found the movie to be too melodramatic and overly sentimental. As some other reviewers have no doubt mentioned, they didn't get horse racing exactly right, but I am always willing to forgive them that. What I regret is that they never seemed to manage to capture the spirit of Ruffian - her fire, her drive, her incandescence. That was the essence of Ruffian and why she was not just another fast horse but a legend, even before her death. But if you have any fondness for horses or horse racing, you should buy this CD any way for two reasons. One, it includes a Sports Century Flashback of the match race, including interviews with Whiteley, Vasquez, Janney's son, and exercise riders who were around Ruffian. The Sports Century show hits all the notes that the movie some how misses. Second, if the pain of losing Ruffian leaves you in tears, you can ease the pain by watching the video of her races and appreciating just how special she really was. If you want to read more about her, I strongly recommend Schwarz's excellent book Ruffian: Burning From the Start

This is a superb DVD encapsulating the wonderful but tragic career of the World's Greatest Thoroughbred filly. Ruffian's match race against Foolish Pleasure really does tear at the heart strings as she broke down during this race whilst leading but continued to run thus making her injury far worse. She survived an operation to repair the breaks in her leg, but unfortunately tried to stand on coming out of the anesthetic and broke her other leg, leaving the Vets with no option but euthanasia, which is a tragic end to an unbeaten career.

La descrizione dell’articolo è ingannevole, dato che si tratta di un’edizione americana (Regione1) non compatibile con gli standard dei lettori europei. Sono molto contrariato per questo disguido.

My primary purpose for purchasing the video was for visual cross reference to the acclaimed book Ruffian: Burning From the Start by Jane Schwartz and to separate Whitley fact from movie production fiction. Frank Whitely was never consulted in the making of the ESPN film; hence the need for a factual book overview in over-riding or coinciding with ESPN was imperative. The tragically ended short life of the magnificent Ruffian is documented accurately only from her first introduction to Frank Whitely at his training facility in South Carolina. Missed was Ruffian’s growing up first year and a half at Claiborne Farms. Although Jane Schwatz’s book includes Ruffian’s first year from the moment of foaling to weaning and the 18 months of prepping her for the big stage of thoroughbred racing, sadly that meaningful portion of Ruffian’s life story is omitted in the movie. That in essence is the ‘joy’ that can be imaginarily inferred from her formative years preceding Frank Whitley’s entrance into Ruffians life. The TSN account of Ruffian’s story begins with critique that both Whitely and Ruffian defied and went on to disprove. Whitley’s protective care and concern for his once-in-a-lifetime God gifted speedy filly is vividly on display by his adamant opposition to his owners and racing commission monetary and publicity concerns. Whitley’s concern first and foremost was always for Ruffian. Sadly he unwillingly was forced to break his cardinal rules of never competing in a match race and never pitting a filly against a colt; only doing so to appease his owner in exchange that he (Whitely) alone would determine Ruffian’s racing future from that point on. Such was the jubilation of having under his care God’s magnificent creation Ruffian whose 10 race past performance line showed nothing but 1’s at every point of a race. Heart break and sorrow came unexpectedly and shockingly on that foggy July early evening and the finality of all lost hope the following early morning. The poignant final moments of the film will leave no-one with a dry eye. Sam Shepard’s portrayal of Frank Whitley is uncanny as the late Sam Shepard too was a horseman. The bonus features contained on the DVD reveal the difficulty of making such a production and reveal intricate details and provide surprising answers to questions that are sure to abound when viewing this heart rending movie.

The characterization of trainer Frank Whitely was an excellent presentation of the personality behind Ruffian and many other great horses. That perfectly cast role lends a believeable realistic sense to a true horse story which in other cases usually leaves a horse person cynical. The career of Ruffian is accuratly portrayed. As in other horse racing movies the races re-enactment are never as exciting as the actual races. In this case Ruffian's complete race history is provided as an extra video feature thereby making this DVD a product which would be treasured by any avid racing fan or historian. The fateful match race scene is actually extremely well done although this is a very graphic display of tragedies that occur too often at any racetrack. The final scenes of the care and attention devoted to the great filly are touching yet realistic. The movie is as well done or better as any horse racing movie previously offered, ranking up there with Phar Lap.
