Nice unit, but first was DOA
My daughter's Superdrive failed in her Macbook Pro mid 2009. We decided to fix it ourselves as Apple wants at least $150 to do the job. I ordered the drive here on Amazon. The first unit I got was definitely used-it had scratches on the case. I installed it anyway and sure enough it was DOA.I returned it to the seller, ordered another from a different Amazon seller (PC Mart) and got a nice brand new unit. I installed it and it worked perfectly. Note: you have to re-boot the computer to get it to recognize the drive the first time.A couple of installation notes to help if you might be thinking of doing a self repair. You will need a #00 Phillips screwdriver. The screws on the Mac are tiny, easy to strip and lose so be careful. I watched a few Youtube videos on how to do the project several times to familiarize myself with the process. Ifixit.com also has detailed instructions with pictures. You have to disconnect the cables from both the hard drive and the DVD drive on the logic board. When reinstalling, press down gently but firmly to reseat them. It's not that hard, you just have to work slowly and carefully. Be careful when replacing the screws on the drive and case to not overtighten them.Next up: replacing her 5400 rpm mechanical drive with a blazing fast Samsung SSD.

So far so good!
I have an older Macbook (late 2008 Macbook 13" unibody) and I was trying to install Snow Leopard then to Lion, but meh my optical drive went out before I could get a chance. I'm not surprised, at least it lasted 4 years! I ordered this one and once I got it I installed it myself with online help from ifixit. I'm so happy! One con (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5), like one other reviewer mentioned, 1 bracket out of 3 doesn't fit. But other than that, it's working so far!

I had my doubts about this optical drive, simply ...
I had my doubts about this optical drive, simply because I was not certain of precise corresponding model numbers and all that stuff, Since my optical drive wasn't working already, and I'm not afraid of poking around under the hood of my macbook, I thought, what the hell? After the replacement everything just works again. I saved a ton on not having to ship out or hire a repair tech. I'd do it again.

Finally have my drive back
My internal drive did not work after 5 years and I really missed it. I got an external one to use until I got this one, but it was not as convenient. I like having an internal drive that my computer recognizes and that I always have with me. I realize the computer companies (Apple specifically) are trying to make CD's and DVD's extinct, and maybe that will happen but it will be a sad say when that happens.

Replacement Superdrive Works Fine
This was a replacement for my late 2011 MacBook Pro. The old Superdrive got a disc stuck in it and once it was removed it no longer worked. I was contemplating replacing this drive with another hard drive, however still had some cds to import into digital files, so got this one and installed it in minutes. Has been working just fine since installation.

Worked on a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13"
There were so many drives listed on Amazon, that I was getting confused as to which was for my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro. I believe I chose this one, since it was the only one that had my model listed in the description. Although comparing the drive to my old one, it was visually different, however screw holes matched up and product worked on first boot. So I'm not complaining.

Does NOT fit MacBook Pro 5,1 nor replace Superdrive Model GS21N
Despite assurances in the Q&A section, this drive (Panasonic UJ898) DOES NOT work with a MacBook Pro 5,1 Early 2009 (original Superdrive Model GS21N). This drive has two screw holes that are about 3/32" too wide. When dealing with such tiny screws, 3/32" is like the Grand Canyon. And, no, it can't be "force fit" nor can another hole be drilled. 3-star rating, because it's not the drive's fault. Fortunately, Amazon has a great return policy.

Did not need thenew drive, but loved the customer service!
After I got into the MacBook, it turned out that a child had jammed something into the optical drive. I managed to get the items out, and the drive again functioned. The company accepted back my purchase with no restocking fee. I was amazed, and also quite pleased. I will be a return customer should I ned more parts in the future..
