My Life: The Greatest Hits

An Outstanding Collection
Now you are bound to ask why a Beatlemaniac, Prog-Rocker, Classic Rock aficionado has purchased and is reviewing JULIO IGLESIAS MY LIFE? The answer is simple my friends, I have toes dipped into other waters, like jazz, classical, swing, folk, and country. I also happen to be a huge fan of The Rat Pack and pop vocalists like Dusty Springfield, Harry Belafonte, Harry Nilsson, Celine Dion and yes Julio (I am half Puerto Rican on my mother's side and grew up with quite a bit of this kind of music in my home). I also have a wife who adores Julio and we had several vinyl albums to replace, but this Double CD set seemed to have everything we wanted on it!Now for fans, surprise! Surprise! Julio had no comprehensive hits collection until the release of this and frankly this bargain for the casual to more than casual fan offers a 37 course meal which you might want to take in slowly, in stages, for fear of wearing your affection thin. All of his greatest hits, his very popular duets, and more than a few "fan favorites" are represented in this collection which is split (also thankfully) into two discs, the first being the mainly English language appeals, and the second being his Latin Hits. What is especially thankful to have are two particular duets: Summer Wind with Ol' Blue Eyes himself, and that awful cantankerous To All The Girls I've Loved Before duet with Willie Nelson, the song we all love to hate but have a habit of secretly imbibing when no one is looking. There is no denying that Julio has "the voice", you know what I mean, the timbre and inflection which caused all the girls to melt, especially on songs like Me Va Me Va, and his covers of classics like My Way, or modern classics like Sting's Fragile can either soothe or upset you, depending upon your disposition. But Julio is a smooth crooner, a cross cultural romance icon, and the man can sing in six languages, so combined with a Sinatra-esque ability to pick hit material, he has to be cited as a musical force to admire. If you are a die-hard Iglesias fan, this package is probably already covered by your collection with the exception of a couple duets, and if you Must Have those, then I guess you will be buying this anyway. Mastering of the recordings is exceptional, terrific sound quality and impressive engineering, any fan of MUSIC should appreciate this. My only qualm with this set is that he was pretty brazen to take on Pavarotti's great song Caruso (written by Lucio Dalla) which appeared on '94's CRAZY and Julio just doesn't have the vocal muscle to carry it off anywhere as nearly comparable to Luciano's version, so I didn't care to see it included on the set, but it scored a "hit" for Julio regardless so...I actually enjoy the Latin language disc more than the "English" (it does have some Spanish and other languages but is geared to English language listeners) as the songs are less adult contemporary radio pop to my ears.Regardless this is an outstanding collection for anyone who wants a simple yet expansive package of Julio Iglesias representing his career.

JULIO IGLESIAS - MY LIFE
AH Julio, what can I say? I must have seen him in concert in the 80's at least 8 times, just couldn't get enough. I lived in California at that time and he was out there quite often. Also saw him in Las Vegas. Now I live in Southwest Florida and saw him a couple of years ago in Fort Myers. He was still great, didn't sing too much but talked more, which was great too and he still looked good. Oh yes, the first time I ever heard him on the radio he was singing 'Hey' and that was in 1984, of course I went right out and bought the CASSETTE (no CD's yet!) and from then on I was hooked!

A Good Try, But ...
This is a wonderful collection of Julio Iglesias' works in English as well as Spanish and French. It includes duets he performed with quite a few big names in recorded music. The sound is quite clean, but the person who did the mixing went well overboard when mixing the accompaniment. When there is a singer, the mix should put the singer out front so the vocals are not obscured by the accompaniment. Unfortunately, it has become a fad among the recording studios to build a wall of sound" that can make it almost impossible to understand the lyrics. This set of recordings is bad, but not as bad as some others where all you get is an impression of a still small voice in the far background that it is impossible to really hear.

Julio Iglesias - My Life: Greatest Hits
This is mellow music. It is enjoyable for a rainy day and want to chill out. Some of the songs on the album or CD are in Spanish. It really didn't matter to me as the background music was so nice.
