Good product! Tips in review

I first bought the tailgate masters brand backup camera for my 2010 tundra but after seeing how bad the picture quality was I sent it back and got this one. I have to say the camera and picture quality is way better! If your having a hard time deciding which one is better it's definitely this one. Econut for the win! Lol hooking it up was about what you would expect I will say I had one issue with the directions being a little vague but I have done wiring before so it wasn't hard to figure out. What I would tell you to help is hook up your black wire to a good ground onto the body of the truck then take the red wire and connect it to your driver side turn signal wire behind the tail light. Then when you're hooking the other end to your head unit connect the red wire to the reverse signal wire from the head unit and then just plug in your av wire and you will be set! The purple wire is basically worthless, just tape it and tuck away. Good luck y'all.

Installed on 2011 Tundra with Pioneer AVH-1300NEX head unit

I don't know if this will help anyone, but I figured this might help clear up some confusion when installing this camera. The camera I received came with a red wire, black wire and purple wire. After some troubleshooting, I figured out that I didn't need the purple wire at all. I tapped into the reverse light bulb wiring to trigger/power the camera. After installing the camera in the tailgate, I ran the wire to my passenger taillight, I should have run it to the driver side instead, but I had to change my light bulb on the passenger side, so I ran it to that side. As a result of this the harness ended up being too short and I had to extend it, this probably wouldn't have happen had I run it to my rear driver's side light instead. I removed the taillight from the truck to access the wiring from above. In my Tundra the positive wire in the reverse taillight was blue/red wire and the other wire was the negative. I say in my Tundra because from what I have heard Toyota does not always use the same-colored wires to indicate a positive or negative. So, if you have a multimeter test it. I connected the red wire from the camera to the blue/red wire on the taillight harness and the black wire/ground from the camera to the other wire in the taillight harness. The Pioneer radio comes with a purple trigger wire that I connected to the red wire from the camera. I plugged the yellow RCA jack from the camera to the plug labeled RCIN on the back of the radio and that's it for the wiring. Getting the wiring harness into the cab was the most difficult part for me I ended up going in through a grommet on the bottom of the driver's side door. I did have to enlarge a hole in sill plate that pretty much lined up with grommet hole in the floor of the cab. I used a step bit to enlarge the hole to about 1/2". Then I was able to run the wire from the bottom of the cab into the cab and run the wiring along the sill plate then under the carpet and behind the dash.I've had the camera for 2 days and it looks pretty good, the picture is clear. I previously had no back up camera so it's nice to have one now. The camera comes with parking guidelines, but my Pioneer radio comes with adjustable parking lines. I didn't want to use the camera parking lines so get rid of them you have to connect a pair of green wires labeled parking lines on the camera harness. These two little green wires are located on the camera harness where you connect it to the taillight wiring. I figured this out after the first day and just removed my taillight and soldered the two green wires together to get rid of the camera default parking lines. Then I was able to use the adjustable parking guidelines on my Pioneer radio instead. The install wasn't too difficult it just required some minor troubleshooting.

Camera review and installation help

I hope this review helps others as far as whether or not to buy or to help install. In my particular case I purchased a 10.1” touchscreen head unit designed specifically for my 2011 tundra. Hopefully wiring will be the same for all but this is my experience. First attempt at installation I couldn’t get it working but next day figured out it was operator error and there was a wire I forgot to connect on my head unit. Make sure you run the wire for this camera down the drivers side of the truck otherwise you will not have enough wire. Once that is done connect black and red wires to the reverse light in your tail light (there should be a red/blue wire and a black wire for the reverse light). Next hook up to head unit. Instructions say that you only need to connect one end of the red and black wires for it to work but that is not true. You have to connect the red wire to either a brown or pink (colors may be different that’s just the 2 I’ve seen) wire labeled “reverse” on your head unit wire harness. Next plug in the yellow video out wire into head unit. Hook everything up in the rear, again black to black red to red ignore the purple wire it doesn’t do anything.Once I got it working it is a decent camera for $50. Tailgate latch fits well and hooked right up. Only thing I wish was that the guide lines built into the camera were adjustable as my truck is lifted and they aren’t exactly right, but they work. Good solution to no back up camera not great but hey it’s better than nothing.

Good option

I have a 2008 double cab and installed this with my pioneer aftermarket stereo. Works great. The nighttime image is clear. Quality of image is great. You will want to connect the rear parking lines in the rear of these cables to disable the parking guides because they are useless. As far as the handle quality goes. It's acceptable I suppose. There is a bit of play in the lock cylinder which makes locking and unlocking a pain in the butt. I just keep it unlocked.

Decent

I would give it 5 stars but the main gripe I have is it didn’t want to power on at first. It’s a bit tricky having to get it all set up with your head unit. It fits perfectly in the tailgate handle location and looks pretty much factory. The video quality is decent, albeit a little slow in terms of FPS. We’ll see how long it truly lasts.

Great latch and camera

Installing of the new latch with camera was super easy and taking the old out was easy, running the wires under the truck through the plug under the driver side floor mat was easy and hookup to the new head unit was good until trying to connect it for the camera when I had to contact customer service and found out I needed to use the brown backup wire in the power supply and it’s worked great sinceThis is for an 08 tundra sr5

Do Not Purchase this headache!!!!

Made of weak/brittle plastic materials that broke away as soon as it was being installed. Tailgate handle assembly did not operate --in fact it locked up and had to manually disassemble to get the tailgate open again
