I chose this tambourine in hopes that it would be well-suited for playing in various styles, and was not disappointed! Beautiful, sturdy, great sound.

This is a wonderful drum for someone who is performing or studying southern Italian drumming traditions, but doesn't have a whole lot of money to spend on equipment. This drum has a great sound for both the tarantella styles (usually played on the pizzica or the tamburello) and the tammoriatta (played on the tammorra). If you purchase the three traditional drums separately, that can be quite a lot of money, not only because it's 3 drums, but also, because of the unusual size of the authentic Italian jingles, their frames and jingles have to be cut by hand. This drum uses a conventional sized frame and jingles, so it is much less expensive to produce, and the drumming student on a budget can save money and still have a great sounding drum, and play the authentic styles on a worthy instrument. And it's a beautiful drum and makes a nice presentation for performance, so there you have it.I do find the non-tunable synthetic head to be a slight drawbaack (it means the drum has a limited lifespan, depending on how much you play), but a natural head would be A LOT more money, and tuning lugs would make the drum much heavier. This is a greater drawback because a heavy drum is tiring, and often people want to dance all night, so you have to think how long can I hold up this drum and keep playing. Lightweight is a tremendous advantage.
