Last Call

You can never go wrong with Jeremy Irons, even when he's portraying that most iconic of American authors, F. Scott Fitzgerald. An engaging film, based on true events, and enlightening about a relatively unknown last "chapter" in his life. The memoirs of his young assistant/secretary form the basis for the movie. If you are a fan of Irons, or Fitzgerald, this one's worthwhile.

I love Fitzgerald and I will watch everything with Jeremy Irons,one of the greatest actors I ever saw.Nice move, slow pace story about the last novel of the author and last days of Fitzgerald life.Lovely movie, very balanced and deeply emotional. Great acting from all actors. Strongly recommended.

You will enjoy this movie if you are both a thinking and sentimental person who loves F. Scott Fitzgerald and his works.It's too bad that good movies like this are not made that often nowadays..

and apparently quite true to its source. Kudos to the author of the memoir on which it was based, Frances Kroll Ring. Btw, that was her, the old lady at the end, looking at the book display in the bookshop window. She was special, no doubt about that. The film used a light touch in its treatment of Sheila Graham, his mistress (he was still married to Zelda, who had been institutionalized by then for years).

I contacted Amazon.com Customer Service.....the DVD I received was defective. When I attempted to start the movie....the tracking of the beginning of the movie was reluctant to follow the tracking and it sputtered in movement for a couple of minutes....I repeatedly pressed start, and then it finally began the rest of the movie without incident. I love the service I receive from Amazon.com, ...they did provide me with a small discount for the DVD which I felt was appropriate. Having just finished rereading the Great Gatsby as an adult and finding so much more in the book than I had as nineteen year old. And also having read a biography about Zelda and Fitzgerald years ago I was interested in seeing this movie about Fitzgerald's last days. So I ordered this movie on the strength of its having Jeremy Irons playing Fitzgerald and was not disappointed. It is an excellent portrayal of his last days alive and of his effort to write his last book The Last Tycoon as well as his relationship with this very young girl/assistant, and his battle with alcohol. A serious movie about an artist who has witnessed the highs of fame, acceptance, love, beauty, and brilliance and is now living through the last days of daily struggle of writing when it is no longer easy, of needing to quit drinking in order to write, of having bad health sapping his energy, but is still honest about himself. I highly recommend it.

First rate acting and an excellent storyline which honored the integrity of Fitzgerald's commitment to his writing and Frances' integrity in supporting him.

over the years and no part of this program rings true. Jeremy Irons is ridiculously miscast as the writer, he in no way resembles the man and does a bad American accent, as well. Fitzgerald died of a heart attack he suffered in Sheilah Graham's Hollywood apartment. I'm not sure they were true to the location in this slipshod production.

A sensitive, reasonably authentic, and superbly acted and directed film that was critically very well received on its release on American television. Both central performances were justly praised and although Irons (nor Gregory Peck who played the author in Beloved Infidel) was not remotely physically similar to F. Scott Fitzgerald he gives a remarkable performances. The inclusion of the real Frances Kroll Ring at the film's conclusion was a master stroke. Moving, but not sentimental, frank, but not tasteless and grotesque, Last Call should bring considerable pleasure to those interested in the author's much troubled life.

nothing wrong with service it was very good BUT as a novice purchaser from America I was unaware of regions to play DVD'S and it would not play on our Blu Ray ! so Elite Digital have very kindly offered to refund me 75% of purchase price as it was a genuine mistake on my part -so I thought that was very kind of them so I am just waiting for the refund as I returned DVD just this week.

First saw this film on TV in the USA. Wanted to watch it again so ordered DVD, only available as a Region 1 import.

One of several films about the last days of Scott Fitzgerald in Hollywood, this tells the story from the point of view of a 23-year-old girl who takes a job as his secretary and finds herself a combination of nursemaid, go-between in his turbulent love affair with columnist Sheila Graham, and sounding board for his attempts to get writing what would be his last novel. You don't need to know anything about Fitzgerald (the girl doesn't) as all is explained in conversations and the course of the movie's excellent script. You don't even have to be interested in his novels to enjoy the story. Irons was a fine choice physically for the later alcoholic Fitzgerald and he is outstanding in the part, charming and often hilarious. The movie is based on the memoir of the secretary (Campbell in one of her best performances).
