The best water pickup solution
These are the best spill pickup mats available. I've used them in the lab, but find great use in my house too. When my refrigerator water filter failed and created a minor flood, these mats soaked it all up in a few minutes. Just hand wring them out to reuse. After the calamity was fixed and a new filter installed, I just washed in the clothing washer and air dried. Ready for the next disaster. I keep a few of these under the hinge end of my indoor spa cover so that the drips that occur on opening the spa are instantly caught.

Realize it does not block water
I bought the "snakes" thinking they would somehow block water. Just know that they don't. Maybe that's my mistake, but the snake-like shape would seem to indicate that a puddle of water wouldn't get past it. But it does not form any kind of seal with the floor, not does it absorb water quickly enough to block a spreading puddle of water. But I did use it to absorb some water. I was pleased with how quickly it dried out.The pads would seem to absorb a puddle more effectively. I leave them on a concrete floor that water occasionally drops onto so I can put things on top -- paint cans in my case.EDIT: A few days ago I had a large leak in my basement that left several puddles. I laid the snakes down in the puddles and they did a nice job picking up most of the water where I laid them. I could tell they absorbed a lot from the extra weight they gained. A simple sponge or towel would not have sucked up as much water and would've been a wet mess. These held the water without dripping too much, though they might drip a little, so to carry them outside I put them into a plastic bin. Now I'm hanging them out to dry.

Super handy in case of water coming out of your window wells and trailing down the walls.
the really do absorb water very well. They were a life saver when our window wells filled up with water and was coming down the walls.

Works great and I can reuse
I tend to have water problems follow me, so I bought this kit "just in case". This summer I had a patio roof installed, where they cut back the gutters and over hang of the roof on the house. Not expecting any rain, the gap was not covered over night. The nexxt morning, when an "unexpected" storm came through, it was like a water fall inside my living room. I quickly grabbed my Pig Spill kit to stop the water from going into the room any further and to soak up the water. Once I had the room dry, I hung the pads and tubes to dry. It takes a long time to dry, but everything has been folded and stored in the original plastic cube for the new water mishap. (I don't think you can reuse in the case of an oil or chemical spill)
