Great movie

Well done movie considering the limitations....a little jingoistic at times but well worth the viewing. Filled with improbabilities one glaring example being it is doubtful that a full bird colonel would be as directly involved in direct combat operations as the John Wayne character is but not beyond imagination. I do have an aside as to some of the trivia comments which are not entirely factual. Anyone being around Special Operations types know that individuals many times especially in combat areas modify their equipment to their particular style including the rigging and placement of weapons and fighting knives which sometimes in those days were worn upside down for example. Small details like that are personal decisions and there are examples of Green Berets and Navy Seals carrying their knives in such a manner....even regular combat infantrymen and support personnel.

The movie was well made, amazing actors, and remained realistic about the challenges of War.

As a "Hippie" back in the late 60's and early 70's I protested against the war. I did, however, see this film only once, back in the day. John Wayne was always one of our biggest flag wavers and that 's where he and I differed. I could wave the flag only if I felt my country was in the right...Wayne could wave it no matter what! Having said all that, I was intrigued by its showing on TCM a few weeks ago. I thought I would see it again to see if my reaction to the theme had changed. Shocking was that fact that I, at long last, understood our reasons for being there. This is one rip-snortin' and rousing film highlighting the famous and infamous elite troops known as "The Green Berets". Wayne, as always, is a larger than life presence in this film and even as a much older man, he still commanded not only his troops, but the audience. So convincing is he in his role, and this story, in general, I could almost feel myself being transported there in a time warp. It was often very graphic in its detail of the ways in which the Viet Cong made short shrift of their enemies. The cast is a fine one and includes David Janssen as a skeptical Journalist, Jim Hutton as a superb "scrounger" who reluctantly joins the service of the Green Berets buts likes the rise in rank to Sergeant, Aldo Ray & Raymond St. Jacques portray Col. Mike Kirby's (Wayne) top kicks and aides and we even see a very young George Takei portray a Vietnamese Captain hell bent on doing his part to rid his country from the grip of the V.C. and Communism! It is a stirring film from beginning to end and although it means to immortalize the Green Berets and their service it does so much more than that. It highlights a time in our history when our homeland was divided against itself but tells the overall story of Vietnam within this microcosm and it does so without apology or leaning toward the propaganda of war in order to sell you a bill of goods. It's honest, intriguing, interesting, well written and directed and is a very fine film. I bought it and I'm glad I did!

Klasse!In Deutschland sind -vielen Dank, 68er!- Werte wie Patriotismus und Freiheit und Kameradschaft und Opferbereitschaft inzwischen quasi verpönt. Und als ob dies noch nicht schlimm genug ist, zieht man hierzulande auch über Menschen in anderen Ländern her, die diese Werte auch nach außen vertreten.John Wayne war ein solcher Mann: er war das Gute in Amerika, und er ging seinen Weg gerade!DIE GRÜNEN TEUFEL wird von der Linken als Propaganda (sic!) verteufelt. Nun, der Film IST Propaganda - aber für das richtige!Der Duke soll leben!

Dass John Wayne ein konservativer Rechtsaußen war, ist allgemein bekannt. Zusammen mit Ray Kellogg führte er 1968 Regie bei dem amerikanischen Kriegsfilm "Die grünen Teufel". Der Film wurde auf dem Höhepunkt des Vietnamkriegs 1968 veröffentlicht. Wayne war sowohl Produzent als auch Hauptdarsteller. Die Filmmusik schrieb Miklòs Ròzsa. John Wayne stießen die damaligen Anti-Vietnam-Kampagnen und Demonstrationen ab, so dass er einen Film dagegen setzen wollte. Der Film basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman von Robin Moore, der 1965 in deutscher Übersetzung erschien. Nachdem der Film zunächst nur in Englisch erschienen war, gibt es seit einiger Zeit auch eine deutsche Version. Neben John Wayne sind noch folgende Stars im Einsatz: David Janssen (bekannt aus der Serie "Auf der Flucht"), Jim Hutton, Aldo Ray und Bruce Cabot. Dem Film liegt als realer Hintergrund die Schlacht von "Nam Dong" zugrunde, bei der eine kleine Einheit (Green Berets) sich gegen die zahlenmäßig stark überlegenen Feinde durchsetzt. Die Haupthandlung des Film ist aber fiktiv.Col. Mike Kirby (John Wayne) wird mit einer Einheit nach der Ausbildung an der John F. Kennedy School for Special Warfare in Fort Bragg nach Danang in Vietnam versetzt und soll dort Guerilla-Aktivitäten gegen die Vietkong aufnehmen. Die Einheit wird begleitet von Kriegsberichterstatter George Beckworth (David Janssen), der dem Krieg kritisch gegenüber steht, aber im Laufe der Handlung eine Läuterung erfährt.Im Übrigen gibt der Film einen guten Einblick in die Taktik der Amerikaner. Der Vietkong führte eine Art Partisanenkrieg, dem die Amerikaner vor allem auch mit dem Einsatz von Hubschraubern begegneten. Der Film rechtfertigt Amerikas Eingreifen in Vietnam mit dem, was es als "einen globalen Kreuzzug gegen die kommunistische Beherrschung der Welt" bezeichnet.Die "Grünen Teufel" kann als sehr patriotisch wenn nicht sogar als nationalistisch für den Vietnamkrieg eintretend interpretiert werden. Der Film kam in dem Jahr heraus, in dem der Konflikt auf seinem Höhepunkt stand und die unerwartete Tet-Offensive der Vietkong-Guerilla den Amerikanern große Verluste und eine beträchtliche Propagandaniederlage bescherte. Die Drehzeit fiel in eine Zeit wachsender Proteste gegen den Krieg, mit dem Ziel, gegen diese Proteste den Krieg zu verteidigen.Zu dieser Zeit war die "Grünen Teufel" der einzige Hollywood-Film, der offen den Vietnam-Krieg unterstützte. Er steht damit im Gegensatz zu späteren Filmen, wie "Geboren am 4. Juli", "Apocalypse Now", "Platoon", "Full Metal Jacket" und "Zurück aus der Hölle".

Voyez ce film que si vous voulez vous divertir et aimez le genre. Ce n'est pas un documentaire historique, mais un film qui à l'époque, a suscité des controverses et fut interdit de diffusion en France, lors de sa sortie et durant près de 20 ans.C'est un film de John Wayne avec John Wayne. Ou à la fin, "l' héroïque" Colonel John Wayne, comme d'habitude, après avoir triomphé des "méchants", s'en va en direction du soleil couchant (même si anecdote très connu de ce film, il part dans la mauvaise direction. Hé oui, John, même au Vietnam, le soleil se couche à l'Ouest).En résumé, c'est un "western de guerre" à la sauce John Wayne. Rien de plus, rien de moins.Si vous voulez voir ou vous attendez à voir autre chose, passez votre chemin, ce film ne vous plaira pas.
