just got the guided field sharpner no how do you use it

With the edge facing away from you, push the blade down the diamond plate (the grey part). There are two diamond plates, one is coarse and the other is fine- running your finger down them will tell you which is which. Use the yellow guides on the ends of the sharpener to tell you what angle to sharpen your blade at. Maintain that angle the whole length of the plate as you slide the blade down it. Don't press too hard, let the plate do the work. If you press too hard you can roll the edge and make it harder to get a sharp edge quickly. Run the blade over the plate about 10 times on each side and then check for sharpness. Repeat until the edge is where you want it. Once you're happy, use the ceramic rod (there are three sides-smooth, ridged, and the fish hook sharpener) and run the blade- at the same angle you used to sharpen it, down the ceramic on alternating strokes until the edge is as sharp as you think you can get it. The leather strop works a little bit, but if you want a cheap strop to put a shaving edge on your blade just take a piece of cardboard and rub in some regular metal polish and let it dry. The cardboard has lots of silicate in it from the manufacturing process and with the polish it acts like a 3000 grit strop to put a fine polish on your cutting edge. The finer the polish, the more like a razor it becomes.Hope this helps.

What are the different grit numbers for each sharpening and honing service?

The coarse grit diamond plate on the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener is 220-grit and the fine diamond plate is 600-grit. The ceramic honing rod is not measured in the same way as the diamond plates, but according to our engineers it would be between a 1000 and 2000 grit. The only difference between the coarse and fine sections of the ceramic rod are the ridges, which reduce surface area to increase surface pressure and acts as a coarser surface.

How hard would it be to sharpen a 7 inch blade on this? I was going to buy the sypderco sharpmaker, but after seeing this I'm not so sure.

I watched my buddy sharpen a fillet knike with it using sweeping angles and it worked fine. This when processing my deer so we had to sharpen it "tons" of time. I believe the knife was a 7" blade.

Are there other plates available for this tool other than those that are supplied. i have the wsgss that has an accessories kit that has other plates.

There are no other diamond plates available for this model sharpener. The WS Guided Field Sharpener uses a Coarse Diamond Plate, 220 grit and a Fine Diamond Plate, 600 Grit. The ceramic rods may be used for a finer blade edge and then honed using the attached leather strop.

So Happy with purchase

Exactly what was needed to bring all my knifes back up to standard. Small enough to pop in your bag if needed. The leather comes preloaded with the green polishing compound to get you on your way. Would recommend to other and will buy again should I misplace this one.

Read the instruction leaflet inside the sharpener before you commence, don't miss the tips.It is quite intuitive to use even for people with only a basic idea on how to sharpen. Quite handy and portable for field carry and will meet almost all kinds of sharpening needs you may face in the field.For the vast majority of us occasional woods people...you don't need more than this.Beginners may find it difficult to sharpen larger blades , above 6", on the field sharpener.
