Does this product work with thin / soft hair?

It does but be aware that it is very strong hold.

Does this have a smell to it? i don't want to smell like axe body spray or anything.

It does have a smell but not a perfume. It's all natural and smells amazing. The smell is gone usually within an hr and very subtle

How does this compare to american crew fiber? is it worth the extra $10?

In my case, I can honestly say yes. Cavalier provides me long-lasting hold, a very natural matte but a healthy finish with a tiny amount of product. In the other hand, with American crew fiber the hairstyle and the volume doesn't last all day, and when you sweat a little the hair just drops and turns greasy. The only thing I miss from American crew is the tropical-citric smell, nothing else.
