Q: Can anyone comment on the wifi performance in a multilevel home?

If you can centrally place the router, you may be able to get good performance. It is highly dependent on the materials that make up your home, it's layout, the overall coverage area, and competing radios in the area. I have always been successful with a single WiFi radio in a rural home of about 3000 sq ft, but I take a lot of time to position and optimize.

Q: can it works as a load balancer?

You can do PBR, so in some way you can have "load balancing". It's just the same RouterOS version that any other MikroTik router has, difference is of course on the HW capabilities and thus the max throughput you can get. Before I bought my first MikroTik device I was running their RouterOS in a VirtualBox VM and I had the chance to taste the configuration options.

Q: what's the maximum sustained wireless throughput you've been able to get with these devices?

I am not sure, I am using this device for residential purpose and it is working great with 10 devices connected
