Yes, it would work well for that. It is a hard rubber but wouldn't destroy the lid like a steel hammer would.

Is this good for hammering outside in soil?

I have not used it to hammer in soil. It is a very nice quality rubber hammer.

How is this eco friendly?

It says eco-firendly head, so rubber probably comes from a sustainable rubber tree, instead of other, similar man-made material.
