Great starter book!
I borrowed a much earlier edition of this book from my dad and used it to get started investing in mutual funds. This book changed my opinion, or prejudice, about "dummies" books. It was well written and delivered all the information you needed to start in a way that did not assume you knew anything about investing. Now I buy it to give it to young people to help them get started.

Wife has this on one of stocks...
Good basic reference book for her to use to let her manage her portfolio that I started for her years ago and will be infusing some funds soon. I would recommend understanding both stock and in lock step with this Mutual Funds and ETF's (Sector Investing).

Good overview
I was surprised - this was a really good overview. It covers bond, stock, hybrid, sector and REIT funds and the author provides specific recommendations. The author also gives practical advice on deciphering fund documentation, fund expenses and taxes. With a 2016 copyright, it needs to be updated soon, but that's the nature of the subject.

Don’t be a dummy...read thIs book!
In my opinion, this is not a book for dummies. This is a book for ordinary people, like me, who want to know the basics on mutual funds and other similar investments. One thing I liked about this book is that it hits the sweet spot: it’s not too simplistic or too complicated which can make other investment books useless. Another good thing about this book is that it provides a list of funds which have low fees, good management, and match specific investment objectives. On top of all that, this book is not painfully boing; I actually enjoyed reading it which says a lot for an investment book. So, in short, you are not a dummy if you read this book; reading this book is without a doubt a smart thing to do before you invest a cent, or another cent, in a mutual fund or ETF unless you are already a mutual fund expert.

This was a steal!
I paid next to nothing for invaluable information to study. You can't beat the realness of the writer's verbiage and the way it's worded for pretty much anyone to grasp the concept.

Excellent book! I should have read this book twenty-five years ago. Very helpful for a self-taught rookie on best choices for financial gains for your future. Good book from pro's & con's owning mutual funds or indirectly stocks.

Good book for understanding Mutual Funds and holding your investment ...
Good book for understanding Mutual Funds and holding your investment for the long haul. Have read other books by this author and find that his advice is sound. My only complaint maybe is that it is a little redundant.

Basic who, how and why of Mutual Funds
Lots of good ideas but spends a lot of time SELLING mutual funds. Needs to state the facts and let the reader make up their mind what they want to do with their money, not sell the product. He also spend more than ample time slam dunking going to a regular broker and assumes everyone is dumb or incompetent to buy/sell stock on their own. Generally explains what and how mutual funds work. Does a good job,

The seller took lot of time shipping the product, I found this part very annoying.Apart from that everything is fine.

Very very useful. Read this before investing and you can avoid the most common mistakes. Investing for a common person like you and me is not so hard and Eric shows you how can easily do it without getting confused or distracted by marketing pitches or high returns.
