Can i record noise by connecting it with a philips microphone directly? i have to tune the gain to its maximum so that i can hear the sound recorded

Hi, You can connect any microphone to this unit as long as it has an XLR connector. You cannot connect a microphone via a jack or USB cable. This device does not connect to a computer directly - you will need to connect it to an audio interface which accepts optical ADAT connections or analogue line in connections. Can I use this to play four separate channels from my Macbook?

No, you can't, this is not a recording interface by itself, it does not have any usb/thunderbold or any other way to comunicate with your pc/mac. You need to have a recording interface that has ADAT in and out so you can hook the octopre to your master interface and then your computer will detect the octopre and you can do what ever you want, and yes you can play separetes channels, from your mac after doing the propper conection to your main interface

Can the Octopre be chained to the Octopre Dynamic for a combined 16 record able channels?

Braden - my suggestion would be to go to the Focusrite website support page and open a ticket with their tech support using the pre-sales inquiry category. I did this when trying to make a selection on ADAT interfaces and they were extremely helpful answering my many questions. I am making the assumption here you are using this for recording and not live output. My opinion is that you would not be able to chain them together. The OctoPre does not have an ADAT input so no way to get the Oct0Pre Dynamic signal into the OctoPre. While the Dynamic does have ADAT in (so you could possibly have the OctoPre feeding the Dynamic), I don't believe you can get more than 8 channels out from the Dynamic to your interface. I did notice that Focusrite has some interfaces in the Clarett and Red lineups that have two ADAT inputs and support an additional 16 channels. That might be a possibility for you (one interface and two OctoPre/OctoPre Dynamic). I would caution you that if you are looking at the OctoPre MKII that it is based off the Saffire line-up and uses a different architecture for the pre-amp design and sounds different than the Scarlett OctoPre/OctoPre Dynamic. Again, my recommendation would be to go straight to the experts at Focusrite.

Hello, Unfortunately, the Scarlett OctoPre is not compatible with the Scarlett 2i2. The Scarlett OctoPre will only work with interface's that have ADAT expansion. Best Regards, Anthony Focusrite
