Billie Eilish releases her highly anticipated sophomore album, Happier Than Ever, via Darkroom/Interscope Records. Continuing the tradition from her multi-GRAMMY Award winning, record-breaking debut, WHEN WE ALL FALL ALSEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, this 16-track studio album features no outside writers or producers and was written by Billie and her brother FINNEAS who produced it in LA. Includes hits singles, "Therefore I Am," and "my future." 100% Recycled Black 2 LP. Billie and Finneas! What an amazing album from these two!
I'm just a tail end boomer who started out with Boston, The Who, Hendrix, Pink Floyd as my first vinyl purchases in the mid 70's. Now I'm all over the place on music, but I have very little pop. I was introduced to these two artists a couple years ago, overhearing them being played by my wife and daughter. I don't listen to the radio much anymore, so my journey into their first two albums was untainted by popular media. In my opinion the music that this duo have produced thus far stands outside of genres, it's really just great musical artistry! I tried not to have too many expectations with this new album from the duo, and I was blown away! Some familiar sounds and lots of awesome new ones, amazing soundscapes! The honesty from Billie continues to flow like a powerful river; she's such an impressive force against the industry that too often eats kids like her for breakfast. I'm so glad she's not only survived so much of that crap, but has managed to hang on to most of her sanity? Hang in there Billie! I was a bit sad to hear some of the words about the loss of joy in her art, that it can feel like a job or maybe she should change her carrier choice. The ever difficult path artists walk as they try to love their art but make money at it as well. I hope to see more amazing work from these two in the future. I'm grateful for what they have given us so far. I'm a big Foo Fighters fan, so when Dave commented that Billie reminded him of his Nirvana days, that validated a lot of my feelings about Billie and Finneas as well.

Happier Underwater
The sophomore slump doesn’t appear to have cured Billie Eilish as she releases the best pop album of the year so far. Pop has taken a hit this year as we’ve been served mediocre over and over again but, Eilish has come to save the day for her genre. The most striking difference between Happier Than Ever and her debut is that her vocals have improved and she seems to have taken a heavy dose of inspiration from Julie London in her style and delivery. Her voice seems to glide over the production easily and with more confidence. With London as an apparent muse, Eilish updates the traditional jazz vocal with her own signature approach. It is truly beautiful to hear. The production of Happier Than Ever is ambitious and well executed. The underwater texture of last year’s Everything I Wanted continues through a great deal of this album. Finneas truly knows how to accentuate the emotional under current of Billie’s emotional lyricism and match the mood of her vocals with a fresh and modern sensibility. I was impressed with the lyrical maturity that Eilish is gaining as she progresses forward in her career. Oxytocin in particular is impressive in it’s metaphor laden storytelling. Not My Responsibility, while not a repeatable listen, is honest, raw, vulnerable and exposes the general public’s interest in the fame game and how it has impacted Eilish since her rise to fame. It feels like a cross between Tori Amos’ confessional truth and Madonna’s fame commentary. The middle of the album slows and offers more of a contemplative, acoustic atmosphere before swinging into full gear again with NDA. It’s a bit jarring but, I feel like for the less adventurous listener, the middle would be considered sluggish. But, the beauty of Happier Than Ever really comes alive in the middle of the record. NDA violently shift back into familiar territory for Billie - plucking beats, soft spoken vocals and a pulsing chorus. Therefore I Am follows and is easily the most digestible track of this ambitious album. The highlight of the album is the title track. Feeling like a musical equivalent to a splatter painting, the song is split in two. Unassuming and clear, the first part is the first splats and splatters and then the second is when the artist just loses herself to abandon and lets it go. Easily a song that will become a classic in her catalog. A beautiful album that I would definitely recommend.
