Excellent low-budget entry-level set to get a youngster into the hobby, but spoilt by not being sold market ready as it has a UK spec. three pin plug fitted and requires a further purchase of an adaptor to function, not specified in the selling description. Hornby are a good company, but somebody needs to tell Amazon to warn customers about this.

This 1:76 scale (00 gauge) set includes a crimson 0-4-0 steam locomotive, an open wagon, a four-wheel coach, an oval track, a controller, and a Hornby MidiMat, making it an excellent starter kit for beginners. The BR Black livery and detailed design are visually appealing, and the plastic construction feels sturdy yet lightweight at 1.71 kg. Assembly is straightforward, and the track layout, measuring 92 x 77 cm, fits nicely on a small table, with the option to expand using Hornby Track Packs. For the price, this set is a fantastic value, offering hours of enjoyment for both kids and adults. The controller is intuitive, allowing smooth speed adjustments, and the train runs reliably on the oval track. The nostalgic theme, reminiscent of meandering village trains, adds a whimsical touch, sparking creativity as I imagine rural scenes. However, the locomotive’s 3-pole motor lacks the power to handle additional rolling stock effectively. When I tried adding extra wagons, the train struggled, slowing noticeably, which limits the set’s scalability for more ambitious layouts. It’s currently unavailable on Amazon, a minor inconvenience for those eager to purchase. I give it 4 stars for its affordability, quality, and nostalgic appeal, making it ideal for casual hobbyists or young enthusiasts. However, the limited power prevents it from earning a perfect score, as it restricts expansion for more complex setups. My son has had this for only 2 months and the controller is faulty. And I can't get money back or another one sent out as I ordered earlier for his birthday and now he can play with his trains. He is in a club and all. Don't buy it
