Automatic light when the power fails. Lasts over 4 hours at full brightness.
Great power failure light. When power is lost or unit is unplugged, it turns on either the flashlight end with a narrow beam or the side light which covers a large area though obviously not as bright as the narrow flashlight beam. Plenty of light to see when the power goes out. Turned on two of them, one to flashlight and the other to side light and left them on. Still bright after 4 hours but when I checked again at 6 hours, they were quite dim (though still working) so they don't quite live up to the 8 hours of light claim. Still, more than enough time to find your flashlight and light some candles. Impressed enough to buy another set of 3.

For the price very good, reliable item
UPDATE Nov. 18, 2016: I ordered another two-pack of these based on liking the two I already have so much, and wanting these in a couple other rooms or perhaps for travel. They're handy when you need a flashlight for something, and reliable when our power goes out typically a couple times a year during storms. In fact I'm raising my review to 5 stars, for the price vs. value received these are outstanding. I hadn't realized it was 4 YEARS since my original purchase and those two units still function well. I see the old ones are slightly less bright than the new ones when I compare the beam side-by-side. One minor difference in the new ones: there is no silver reflector behind the front 3 LEDs. It's just a white "reflector" same color as the rest of the device. This casts a softer more diffused light when I compare on a white ceiling, but it's a minimal difference. There is still a silver reflector behind the 2 front LEDs. The new lights arrived fully charged as with the two I'd purchased in 2012. Original review: These units are less expensive than a couple of the competing emergency lights, one reason I purchased 2 of them. I received (on 8/7/12) model #71134 (without "CC" at the end, which is what was advertised here and that other reviewers mention). I don't know what the difference is with the "CC", but mine do seem to work well and have good illumination (there are only 2 or 3 LEDs, keep in mind) in the dark. Both had a charge when I received them. Both come on at power failure (tested in a power strip) with either the front light or the flashlight function as selected. There is no "night light" except a red LED (on all the time when plugged in) which would be an aid in finding the device in the dark but provides virtually no light on its own (the selected main light comes on of course if the power goes off or if you unplug the device). I opened one device up (4 Phillips screws) to check the battery type and there are 3 "AAA" batteries enclosed in a green plastic-wrapped pack (stamped "Ni-MH AAA 200mAh 3.6V"), which is soldered to the device circuit board (unfortunately.) So it will be possible to replace the batteries if needed, but it'll probably require some light soldering (or maybe my favorite, heaving taping!) of the wires to the battery pack. I hate throwing things like this away just because the batteries stop working. The good news is, they are labeled as Ni-MH, not Ni-Cad batteries, which should perform better. For the low price, this is a simple and effective emergency light that will help me find the door or the lanterns and other gear in an emergency or power outage.

Work perfectly!
These little lights are the best! We live in an area with frequent power outages and only part of our house is on a generator. These plug in and turn on (either as a single-beam down/up light or 3-beam light. You also can unplug and use as a flashlight. I have probably 6 - 8 and none have failed.

Great little light
This light is about 5 inches tall, 2 inches at the widest, and about 1.5 inches deep. It works exactly as described. When plugged in with the power on, a small orange light is on, indicating power on/charging. When the power goes out, the light automatically comes on, either the top or the front depending on the "auto/off/auto" switch location. I have some of these set to the front lantern in open areas, and some set to the top flashlight if they are behind something else. The lights are not terribly bright, and could be a little brighter (two LEDs in the top and 3 on the front), but for the money (around $8 when I purchased), these are absolutely worth it for me. No more checking batteries in flashlights, or having lights that don't work during a power outage!

Great lights, house is never dark in a power outage with no effort on my part
These are great. Plug them in (I have 2 on every level of the house), and forget them. When there's a power outage, the lights automatically come on. My house is never dark in an outage. Light level is respectable - you'll want actual high powered flashlights for any serious use such as in a disaster, nighttime outdoors use, etc., but for emergency house lighting these are the best. I have bought these several times, both to fill out my house after first testing a few, then as gifts for other people. Still going strong after a couple of years. Recommended.

Excellent form factor, but needs DIY battery upgrade
Thanks to Richard D. LeCour for his review. Please read it. I followed his advice and have these in my house and are making additional units for my brother. I'm a novice DIY, so I've included pictures for those of you who are like me. My instructions for the battery upgrade follow. 1) Remove 4 screws and carefully open the unit. There is a plastic snap. I use a blade to gently pry open. 2) Remove the two PCB boards. See red circles in photo. The bulb and reflector will just come out. 3) Identify solder connections for battery. Blue circles in second photo. 4) Use soldering iron/gun to remove battery. You can see that one connection left solder covering the hole. I used copper braid (wick) to remove the molten solder and clear the hole. 5) See photo showing both holes cleared. 6) Install upgraded battery making sure to get the polarity correct. 7) Reassemble unit. Careful to adjust the red led to fit back in its lens housing. They worked well during our last power outage. Although I have yet to test the lifetime, I think we might be able to get 8 hours of illumination from a fully charged unit. Update: After installing 1000 mAh battery pack the light (3 led) lasted at least 14 hours. The light was still on but dim at 24 hours. This is from a test of one unit after fully charging.

These work perfect in a power outage to partially light up a room for safety. Easily converts to the flashlight in a power outage.
