Q: does this use standard 8 hole sanding discs or are the discs bosch specific?

All 8 holes disk with a 5" diameter fit, or that is my finding to date.

Q: Is the 6ah battery too cumbersome to use with the sander?

No, absolutely not. We use the battery with no difficulty, it is a great tool for sanding doors and furniture. It is easy to handle and not cumbersome. I am a 72 year old female with average upper body strength.
