Tornado (Trophy Chapter Book)

I read Tornado aloud to my third graders. They loved it!

Tornado by Betsy Byers A book review by Jaci Bailey A family, and Pete, go into the cellar because a tornado is coming toward the farm. They tell stories in the cellar. Pete tells stories about a dog he had as a child, named Tornado. Next, the dad of the family knocked on the cellar door and said the tornado was over. In my opinion, Pete is an excellent storyteller. I think it was wonderful when Pete told that Tornado, the dog, came in a tornado. It was sorrowful when Pete said that Tornado, the dog went home with the other girl. The best part was when Tornado came back to Pete’s house and stayed.

My second grader loved this!! He read it in an afternoon. It had enough familiar vocabulary that he was able to comprehend but also had some new and exciting word introduction too! 10/10.

Good book. It is an emotional book, too. It is very interesting. Is also a book that is a good dog book.

Great book for young readers

An excellent book for 3rd- to 5th-grade readers.

This was a really good story about a dog named Tornado and a cat named Five-thirty. I chose this book to fill a prompt in the 52 Book Club Challenge 2025.

I purchased this book from Amazon simply based on the cover and title, knowing nothing of Betsy Byars. I teach 3rd grade and I read this book aloud over just a few days. The students moaned each day after reading only 2 chapters, not wanting to stop. At one point in the book students were actually crying. This is a wonderful short read to get students into the wonder of books and a great one to discuss great writers and what captivates us. Do the one chapter challenge with students using great books: read just a chapter or two and stop. If they like the book they can check it out from the library to read on their own. This gets great excitement going among the students. I just ordered more of her books on line to read in this last month of school. Highly recommend.

perfect level of reading for a beginner reader, clear words, great sized text and the length of the book isn't intimidating

Reading and studying this book as a review with our 3rd child next term. Older 2 kids remember it fondly

This is such a sweet story! It was very engaging and a story that pulls at your heart strings. Especially if you have ever loved a dog. I think it is suited for children between ages 7 - 10.

I bought this book for my 8 yr old nephew. It is smaller than I anticipated, but he loves the story saying it is so entertaining and nice. That is five stars in my estimation.
