I suppose you can. Just install vertically.

Q: For the patio door security bar, how small are the adjustment increments? Can it be adjusted by half an inch at a time?

It's a sliding square tube inside of another square tube. There's not teeth. Once it's down and the locking clip is engaged, it doesn't move.

Q: Does this stay up and out of the way on its own when not in use?

I usually have it laying next to the door, so yes I guess?
