Great for the money
I purchased this hatchet and knife for light miscellaneous use in a campsite setting. I went with one of the most inexpensive hatchets I could find because I'm just experimenting to see if the hatchet is more useful than a large heavy knife for camping. The jury is still out on that issue, but I ended up using both the hatchet and knife for a raised garden-bed project in my yard that required me to create about 50 pointed wooden stakes 1-inch or more in diameter. The hatchet did a great job cutting rough points on my wooden poles, and the knife trimmed up the points nicely.) I didn't get any nicks on the blade edges of the hatchet or knife, even though I accidentally whacked a brick several times with the hatchet. I think this set would be suitable for a teenager or first time camper for general use. The hatchet is too small for heavy-duty use, and the knife is a little too thin to serve as a trusted survival knife. But I was pleasantly surprised at the durability of both. My only complaint pertains to the hatchet. I have very large hands, and the handle of the hatchet is very small. It was somewhat difficult to control the hatchet, especially while wearing gloves, because I just couldn't get a proper grip on it. I plan to fix that issue with some layers of tape on the handle. This set is well worth the money.

It's a knife, not a macete. It's a hatchet, not an axe.
At this price, it gets 5 stars. Got mine for $25 US. This is the second SCAX10 I've bought, just needed another. It cost me the same price a couple years ago.for just the hatchet. They threw in a big knife for the same price, so I bit.The hatchet is the best small chopper for the price, by far. My older one bears the scars of abuse and multiple sharpenings, often with a file. Have put a razor edge on it a few times. It's just a great camp axe. Just don't hang it from the belt loop too much. Sheath is plenty good enough to throw it in a pack and not much more. The knife is the big "if". Since it was essentially free, can't gripe. It's very hollow ground, so edge durability will be nil until you sharpen it to a scandi filet knife. Besides, it's made of the same 3Cr13 as the hatchet. At least it's easy to sharpen. It's the beater blade destined for destruction in the future.I know the hatchet well. Can easily predict the knife. It"s worth every penny at $25. Buy the combo and give the knife to a responsible young teen who lives in the country. Or keep the knife around for things that would make you cringe to do with a better one.

Handy SMALL hatchet but...
I bought this set to gift the hatchet to a friends young son but I kept the "mini machete" for myself... More on it later.I have one of these hatchets myself from a previous order and have used it for a couple of years now with no complaints. This is a good tool and does what it was made for such as chopping, splitting, and other general light camp chores. The all in one construction (rubber coated metal handle) means you don't have to worry about breaking a handle if you miss or get stup… Err, careless... yes, careless. That said, I absolutely cringe when I see these young people on those videos splitting wood with their belt knives by beating on it with a chunk of wood. Why do they risk damaging or breaking their knives when it may be the only fixed blade that they have with them... Do any of them even carry a stone to touch-up the edge after that abuse? One of these little hatchets weighs next to nothing, can be slipped into a side pouch with one of those little folding saws and between the two you can process all of the wood most camps would need without risking your knife... You can even skin game with one if you have a stone with you and touch up the edge before hand.…. Now the "mini-machete"... (the reason I subtracted a star from the review)I laughed when I saw it because to me it is a butchers knife with a fancy rubber handle... Lets list what is wrong with this knife for use as a machete..1-- The grind. I can't think of all the fancy names for the different grinds right now but this blade has a hollow grind that is more often found on a knifes cutting edge. If they wanted to keep the blade from chipping during use as a machete, they should have left more metal down to the edge and had a round grind like the hatchet.2-- The blade is only 1/8 of an inch thick. You go to whacking and twisting with this and you're asking for a bent and twisted blade over time with many notches on its edge.3-- The sheath has only stitching right where the "belly" of the knifes blade will slide over it(belly- the curved part of the blade towards the tip)... A good edge on the blade and you will have a hole thru your sheath here.……………….. IN CONCLUSION ………………..This is a good little set if you consider you are getting a hatchet for around 20 bucks and a KNIFE for 8.If you want a knife for "batoning wood" this one is cheap enough to not care when you ruin it.. Knock yourself out.Myself, I am going to strip that black gunk off the blade, heat it up and dunk it in oil to season the blade a little then I will put a good edge on it.After that, I'll put a plastic sleeved rivet where the blade will slide over the curve of the sheath and use this knife like I would a kitchen butcher knife.... You know, to cut meat and veggies up.

Excellent quality for the price!
So my kid came home from camp one day all bummed out because the group of older kids (all the same age or even slightly younger than the group he got placed in) were having fun chopping firewood one day. He was told by the camp counselor that if he brought a tool, he could also participate. Initially we were only looking for a short machete or something similar but saw some sets like this. After reading some other reviews and the details, we decided to go with this set to surprise him. The blades are extremely solid, and we knowingly/intentionally purchased ones that have a full tang (blades goes all the way through the handle) for safety. I somehow overlooked the fact that both the hatchet and the machete came with their own sheaths with included belt loops (I know some of the sets I looked at did not), so that was a pleasant surprise. All in all, a great buy and a totally worthwhile purchase!

Practically Perfect...
This hatchet was the star of my camping trip. Cutting kindling and medium logs was a breeze. Was able to use it for a few hours with little problem. My one complaint is that I started to develop a blister where my finger was being pinched each time I struck the wood. I'm going to make the handle a little more ergonomic using cord or fabric but otherwise I cannot ask for more. The knife that the combo comes with is substantially larger than the listing would have you believe and is closer to a bowie or mini machete, that was a nice surprise! If you need a hatchet, get this combo...
