Cheap serial device to troubleshoot a Seagate

Posted 4 instead of 5 stars because it took me hours to find a terminal program that works with the correct driver on Win 7x64. Otherwise, this is a well made product originating from China. The 4 cable terminations come with a black plastic sleeves that you can easily remove to insert into tight spaces on the target.Original driver from Win 7 does not work, causing "port unable to open" errors although Device manager shows that driver installed properly. After downloading the driver pack from Prolific Taiwan website, it verifies that the converter uses authentic components (that's a relief). I proceed to install the latest drivers.HyperTerminal does not seem to work with this serial device at all as it is unable to open the port (tried administrator and all combinations of compatibility modes). I had to download a few other terminal software to try and access the port. Even with the latest drivers, I had to run the terminal program as an Administrator with WinXP compatibility. I had only one success and that is enough for me to verify loopback and gain access to the Seagate drive and erase the SMART data.I wouldn't totally fault the device or the chip manufacturer or Windows or my stupidity totally. I just wish it comes included at least with proper installation instructions and a quick guide that I can follow to get it up and running without drama. I absolutely dislike spending hours getting it just to work.

Great with correct drivers and correct RX/TX wires.

I had problems initially getting this to work in Windows 8.1, I found some drivers on Prolifics website which got it working here: http://www.prolific.com.tw/us/showproduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41Then I had problems programming and Arduino Pro Mini and thought it was maybe my soldering or a dodgy cable. I was getting the error: avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00There are lots of solutions on the internet but non fixed mine. I then saw a comment about the RX TX being swapped on some cables, swapped mine around and it all worked.Once you get past the driver issue and then figuring out which is RX and TX then it works well and for the price is excellent. Hopefully picture shows the cable connected to an Arduino Pro Mini (my soldering is very bad)

I sincerely hope that it works better for you than it did for me since it''s ...

I bought this to get a serial console on my RPi, which I tried both on Debian and Windows, sadly I failed to get my console with this device. I did however manage to get a console on my router using this.I bought another slightly more expensive device with a different chipset and using the same settings and jumper connections it did work with my RPi, so who knows what went wrong? If this works for you, then you're much luckier than I was!I blame Chinese manufacturing variation.Anyone who does decide to buy it, I sincerely hope that it works better for you than it did for me since it''s definitely the cheapest option out there.

Not sure about reliability

Bought for a Raspberry Pi ProjectLike another reviewer, I also had to reverse the signal wires (green and white) to that shown on the adafruit page.i.e. I connected thus...Pin 6 : GND = BlackPin 8 : GPIO14 TXD = greenPin 10 : GPIO15 RXD = whiteOptionally...Pin 2 : 5V = red...which powers the Pi from the USB cable.I also had problems with extension cables.A 2 meter cable, and the host computer wouldn't detect the device properly.A 1 meter cable seemed to work, in that the dvice was detected correctly, but serial communications were corrupted, where they happened at all.To get a stable, reliable serial connection, I needed to connect the usb plug directly to the host machine.I have tested it (connected directly), for two hours now, and it seems stable, but I'm not sure I would trust it for mission critical applications.

8.1 Incompatable

I need this to work with Windows 8.1The cable I was sent came in a plastic bag, NOT the blue box shown in the picture. For this to work with 8.1, you need to have a Revision D version of the product, NOT a Revision A version. There is nothing on this page or on or with the cable to tell me which Revision this is.Since I cannot find ANY PL2303HX device listed that has either the A or D suffix it's a complete lottery as to if this will work on 8.1 or not. Some people will get working ones. I didn't.

Works fine with Raspberry Pi

It works fine with the Raspberry Pi, but I had a little trouble at first. Unlike other reviewers, I had to swap the green and white leads (RX and TX) compared to the Adafruit lead. Also, I couldn't get the converter to work initially with a USB extension lead. I was getting errors logged in /var/log/ saying "device descriptor read/64, error -71" and "unable to enumerate USB device", though it was OK plugging the converter directly into the USB socket. I even bought a new USB extension lead: no difference. I don't know if the converter is fussy, or my computer, but plugging the extension into a different socket (actually, the hub on my monitor) fixed the problem.

Good and not expensive

This cable is good and affordable by any pocket. my only dissatisfaction is that there is no indication of the meaning of the colours of the cables and there is a possible confusion as to whether green or black is GND. Just a little label would correct this shortcoming.JLV

Cheap, effective gadget

Great value, useful gadget.Hooked up to my Raspberry Pi as I type this - powering it via USB and providing a serial console to access it.For easy reference, I connected it as:Red (5V): pin 2 (top left), white pin 8 (UART TXD), green pin 10 (UART RXD), black (ground) pin 25 (bottom right).I'm using Linux; I connected with:sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200
