Great book
Easy to follow. Love the A-Z series. A pictorial contents list at the front would be useful but I use another book for that, then find the stitch in this book. The second embroidery stitches book is also fab.

Ok
Ive just taken up embroidery and wanted a book which explained all the most basic stitches to me and gave me useful information on whats all involved as an absolute beginner. Although theres lots of youtube videos to explain all this, i'm old fashioned and prefer a book to keep referring back to so got this.It is exactly as described. Its a nice book to look through, glossy pages with explanations of all the stitches and clear diagrams on how to do them, and you do get a couple of pages at the beginning that explain all the basics. But - it wasnt exactly what I was looking for as an absolute beginner, I think it's probably a bit more suitable for someone who has some experience and wants to expand their knowledge. A beginner like me could still get something from this book, but what puts me off it is that it's an A-Z,so the stitches are listed in alphabetical order. Before I bought this book I didnt even think about that aspect of it, but when I got it I realised I would have preferred it to have been divided up by types of stitches or uses, which would have helped me more as a beginner. There is another really excellent book I bought just after, which I prefer and would recommend to other people in the same boat as me, who want a more helpful layout - Embroidery Stitches Step by Step by Lucinda Ganderton.Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised by one thing - theres quite a decent number of ribbon embroidery stitches, which show you how to sew eg little roses out of ribbon, and theres quite a few pages on bullion knot roses and ribbons made with them - for someone who doesnt know what that is, its like a way of making textured stand out shapes instead of just flat embroidery. I was going to give this book to someone else as a present - it would make a nice gift - but decided to keep it just because of the ribbon stitches, because I'd like to try some of these in future. So I'm not giving it 5 stars just because its not exactly what I was looking for at the minute, but having said that its still a nice book with lots of good things which I'll probably use it for later.
