BWT Universal Roof Hook made in the UK

I have a difficult part of my garage with a recessed shed which prevents me from accessing the timber wall and every year or two I have balanced precariously on my ladder with a brush tied to a stick trying to apply wood stain with varied levels of success. This year I decided to use a spray and made quite a mess and so determined to do the job right it purchased this ladder hook kite. Out of the box, I easily fitted it to my three section ladder; which it doesn't impede when I collapse it and set about claiming onto the roof safely. I must that I had my son stand on the base of the ladder and the level of incline is not that great and as such I had the ladder fully extended, however, that said I was able to clamber up in complete safety and paint the apex and wall of my garage properly and without mess for the first time in 9 years. I doubt if I will have any other use for these hooks, other than for this task, however, comparing a little over £30 to a broken bone or worse, for me it represents great value and allows me to undertake this job confident that the ladder will not slip and that I am safe.

Strong, light and effective roof hook which works well. The only downside is that it takes a while to fit this to the ladder and so it is not easy to remove if you need the ladder back for conventional use. The issue is the fixing system which is a series of fiddly bolts that should not be over-tightened and required a particular spanner - which luckily I had. A clip on system would be better, or even wing nuts to spin down the threads. That said, worthwhile for the money.

Needed a roof ladder to be able to run a small repair on a slate roof. Local roofer said he would do the job but, as with all trades these days, was always too busy and never contactable. So i decided to give it a go myself. To hire a roof ladder for 24 hours was 31 quid. To buy this kit for keeps was 34 with free delivery. It arrived the very next day. Assembly was slightly tricky due to the small components but not at all difficult and, once fitted to my ladder, was very secure. I rolled the ladder up the roof and flipped it over onto 2 patio lounger cushions to protect the slates and got the job done in half an hour. Brilliant and saved money too.

This is simple enough to instal....the supplied instructions aren’t in huge detail but are sufficient. The thing to note is that the kit clamps to the two top rungs....the supplied drawing isn’t totally clear on that. The other thing is to think about which ladder to use. In my case, the upper section of a two section ladder was the best option. However if you clamp the kit to the top of that ladder, the two hooks that stick out from the ladder to hook over the rungs of the lower section would stick out and be potentially dangerous when gettin on or off the roof ladder. So I reversed the ladder section so that those hooks were at the ridge where they aren’t a hazard. The ladder rungs on my ladder are flat where you rest your feet and curved underneath. It did mean as a consequence that using the ladder section reversed also meant that my feet were using the curved underside of the rungs as treads rather than the intended flat tread. It didn’t cause any problem to me and was a far better option than having the ladder the right way up with hooks upwards! Apart from those observations, the ladder kit worked fine for me...the wheels rolled up the roof and the roof ladder hooked end did it’s job perfectly well. So pretty good overall, happy to recommend. PS...a good idea to put some decent soft packing under the lower end of the ladder to help protect the roof tiles.

This roof ladder hook kit is a well made piece of kit and its easy to assemble. I simply can't understand why some reviewers complain about the assemble kit. As the old saying goes. If all else fails read the instructions or in this case all you have to do is look at the photograph on the outside of the box.

Let me start with, if your prepared to do some work. The u-bolts don’t fit their bracket,s , you either have to buy new u-bolts or adjust them. The bolts that go through the wheels are too short. It reminds me of years ago when things where made in China were bits didn’t quite work out but to compensate they gave you extra bits that didn’t fit. If your prepared to fix the problems then it does the job well .

There’s both positives and negatives with these roof ladder unit but overall mostly positive. The good: They are light, not adding much weight to a likely long and heavy ladder. They are also a good shape, holding over the roof line easily. The wheels make it easy for the ladder to ride up the roof. The bad: The wheels could be bigger and softer, as you worry about cracking tiles. The worse thing however are the fittings. They come with such long U bolts that fitting and removing can take a rather longer time for most ladders.

In a nut shell as Ive put above it does the job and is easy to fit and use. I bought this direct from Amazon and it was just as pictured with the yellow wheels. I received it quickly in a large box with some paper filler to stop it rattling about - well done Amazon packers. The assembly is simple - look at the photo and ensure it is fitted as shown with the ladder underneath (which will sit on the roof). Use is even simpler - put the ladder wheel side down on your roof and push it towards the apex. I had to push mine up the tiles and it did this quite easily as my aluminium ladders are quite light anyway. When the hook is over hanging the apex gently roll the ladders over so the hook is now face down - done! I walked around to the back of my garage to check the fitting and it was well over the ridge cap tile and half way down the tile - so nice and secure. I was then able to clamber up the ladder safely - standing up on an angle at one point, and fixed my broken fascia on my house. Overall I couldn't of done the job I did without this and it would have cost me a lot more to get someone in to fix it so 5 stars for saving me money in a round about way. When I need it again its there for me. Removal is no hassle - just use a socket wrench and you'll be done in 5-10 minutes. I would recommend this to any DIY'er.
