Exchanged for a one piece- works great
*Update* Exchanged the folding grill for a one piece and it worked out great! Took it backpacking and cooked a steak I brought over an open fire and it was perfect. Grill deformed a bit over the fire, but I subjected it to a ton of heat, so not a deal breaker. For best results, season in the oven prior to use. Keeps food from sticking and makes it easy to clean. Bonus fire making kit was great! Used the ferro rod and bellows to start the fire I cooked on, so all around very satisfied! The folding model is not well made. You have to do a lot of wiggling and adjustment to close the hinges and even then it is difficult to fold flat consistently. The hinges are also large, so you lose a lot of usable cooking surface where the two panels meet. It is safe to assume that once soot and smoke build up residue- the hinges will be that much more difficult to work with, and then you’ll be handling a dirty grate. In a backcountry setting, this would be a hassle. Great concept, poor execution. I am returning and will replace with the standard 6x12. The construction of the grate itself is very good, and it will likely be lighter. The trade off in size vs functionality is worth it- as the hinged model is more of a novelty than a practicality.
