This three part landmark documentary series examines the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin and the subsequent events that led to the establishment of an independent Irish State and indirectly to the breakup of the British Empire. Narrated by Liam Neeson, the series places the Irish Rising in its European and global contexts as anti-colonialism found its voice in the wake of the First World War. The documentary explores the crucial role of the United States and of Irish America in both the lead up to and the aftermath of the events. This seminal part of Irish history and its ramifications were felt as far as India and other far flung parts of what was then the British Empire. With the centenary of the Rising, it is time to take a fresh look at both at the events themselves and their significance in world history. 1916 brings new understanding to the complicated interconnections between Britain, Ireland and the United States that have continued to have significance up to and including the Irish peace process. Review: Quality. - Good film. Review: Learn about the 1916 rebellion ! - As far as I know the 1916 Irish rebellion is rarely covered in UK school history classes. Certainly I knew almost nothing about it, so I purchased this DVD to learn something about how Ireland's independance eventually came about. It seems very well researched, well produced and authentic, so I would recommend it to anyone that, like me is interested in this aspect of UK and Irish history.

Clear narration of important part of Irelands history.
Good documentary setting out events leading up to and also the aftermath of the Easter uprising. Would be a good starting point for anyone studying this period in history. Excellent narration. More explanation as how this linked into or led to following events such as division of Ireland

The 1916 Uprising - a seminal event that has shaped and defined British politics
This series of documentaries is vital to understanding current UK, European and world constitutional politics - a seminal event that influenced the Russian Revolution, and the Independence of India - a milestone in the decline of the British Empire. It has shaped and defined British politics from then until today, and significantly influences Scottish and Welsh constitutional politics at this time. Ireland paid a terrible price in blood for its independence. If we are to avoid more bloodshed, we must learn form Ireland's experience and find a peaceful, democratic route to the resolution of the constitutional aspirations of the four nations of Britain.

Such a parcel of rogues in a nation
Good documentary of the 1916 blood sacrifice that eventually created the horribly scarred state of Ireland. Men like Pearse who knew the Easter Rising had no chance of sucess but would generate enough outrage to create a genuine popular resistance. The one thing they couldn't predict was a truly horrific civil war that killed many of the brilliant leaders like Michael Collins and left the rather slimy DeValera in charge.

My wife and I sing a lot of Irish songs, not just on St Paddy's Day. There are many "rebel songs" from the various Irish rebellions that occurred until Ireland finally won their independence. This documentary does a great job of explaining the events leading up to, during, and after the 1916 Irish Easter Rising, and introducing the major players in the rebellion. Now when we sing some of these songs, it's not just words to repeat. We have a better understanding of the who, what, where, when and why that we're singing about.
