Works well, recommended
Seems to be well made, plug and play function, no drivers needed, seems to work well and speedily on my home PC to Router wired connection, as the LAN port of PC has gone faulty, cheaper than buying an internal PCI card or having PC repaired, and apart from it taking up a Rear PC USB port I'm very happy with the performance, would recommend it to replace or add an extra LAN connection to an older PC.

Excellent USB 3 to Ethernet adapter
I recently purchased a new Razer Blade 15 Advanced laptop which unfortunately doesn't actually come with a built-in Ethernet port. For day-to-day use I don't actually need an Ethernet port because the wireless performance on the laptop is excellent but the recovery disk for my backup software, Acronis True Image, doesn't seem to support Wireless and in the event of needing to recover from backup I would need an Ethernet adapter. The adapter arrived well packaged in a cardboard box and also came with a driver CD. For Windows 10 I didn't actually need the CD and Windows detected and installed the USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter as an 'ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter'. The adapter has a short moulded USB 3 Type A plug and lead that connects into a small metal cased box that houses the Ethernet port. The Ethernet port also has the usual orange and green LEDs for link state and connection speed. So far I've been delighted with this Amazon Basics USB 3 to Ethernet adapter. I can't say that I've ever heard of 'ASIX' as a chipset manufacturer but I've been really impressed with the performance of this one so far. In Windows, file transfers alone consistently exceeded 100MB/s for large files and the latency is also very low. The adapter does not seem to get warm, even after heavy usage. The best thing for me is that the Acronis True Image USB recovery disk also recognises this USB Ethernet adapter and allows me to backup to/restore from to my NAS perfectly. A lot of the negative reviews for this product seem to be around compatibility (or lack of) with MacOS so I cannot comment on that, but I've had absolutely 0 issues with this and Windows 10. Some users also said their adapters died unexpectedly after a short amount of time. If this turns out to be the case for me then I'll certainly update my review. Overall I couldn't be happier with this USB to Ethernet adapter. Pros: - Excellent value - Works perfectly with Windows 10 (no drivers required) - LInk state/connection indicator LEDs - Feels well made with the Ethernet port enclosed in a metal chasis - Excellent performance (consistently more than 100MB/s on large file transfers across a gigabit LAN) - Works perfectly with Acronis True Image recovery USB/CD (outside of Windows environment) Cons: - Honestly, none

Good for everyday use — but not suitable for firewalls, servers or virtualized networking
I bought this adapter to use in a Proxmox cluster while testing pfSense and OPNsense firewall VMs. Although the adapter works and is detected as an ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, I found it could not deliver full gigabit performance under load. On my 900 Mbps internet connection the adapter consistently delivered around 600 Mbps download and ~150 Mbps upload, whereas my Intel PCIe network card in the same setup had no issue reaching the full 900 Mbps both ways. This seems to be a limitation of the ASIX chipset, which uses a lot of CPU and doesn’t perform well when used as a WAN interface or in virtualization or firewall environments. That said, I want to be clear: ✔ For normal home users, laptops, and general wired connections, this adapter is absolutely fine. It installs automatically, works reliably, and provides a stable wired connection for everyday browsing, streaming, or office work. ❌ But for advanced users running: Proxmox / VMware pfSense or OPNsense Server workloads High-speed WAN routing Anything requiring sustained >700 Mbps throughput …this adapter is not the right choice. In these cases, an Intel-based NIC or a 2.5GbE Realtek RTL8156B USB adapter performs much better. Overall, a good value adapter for basic network connectivity, but not suitable for firewall, virtualization, or high-performance networking. Why 4 stars? ✔ Works well for general consumers Most people buying this will use it for laptops, desktops, or temporary wired connections. For that purpose, the adapter works correctly. ✔ Good value It’s inexpensive, plug-and-play, and does what Amazon says for typical users. ✔ Your issue is specific to advanced use cases The performance problem is not something most buyers will ever encounter. USB adapters (especially ASIX) are known to perform poorly under Proxmox/pfSense/OPNsense — but that's outside the intended consumer usage. ✘ But… it's not suitable for high-performance or professional networking So a perfect 5 stars isn’t appropriate either.

Works on any OS
I use this with my laptop at uni to connect to the ethernet, very useful when linux starts acting up and not connecting to wifi. The speed using this is a lot higher than over wifi and is extremely easy to use. I have not had any issues with this working on both linux and windows and is compatible by default. The quality is a little sub-par, but itd an ethernet connector, not an art piece and does its job amazingly

Fantastic performance and build
Why did you choose this product over others?: Fantastic product for the price, appears much more robust that the one I was using before and has up to Gigabit performance! Works plug and play with my Surface Pro 6! And for only £4! Will be buying the aluminium USB-C one for my Mac now too! One thing to note is that the item does not come with a product driver CD that is pictured, instead Windows and Mac will automatically source the correct drivers needed (ASIX AX88179A).

It definitely works, results vary!
Been trying to find a ethernet to usb that works well with my laptop on a wired network. I had a usbc hub that I had issues getting max speed with so tried this device. I have gotten close to maximum speeds of my network with this so assume it works as intended. Though that varies from where its connected, what device its connected to and strangely the port on the device its in too. Sometimes get better speeds with a usbc to USB adapter in the middle! I didn't have to use the installation CD either. Just plug and play and good to go, not like majority of computers have a CD drive these days. So overall I'd say this is a good cheap option for reliable wired Internet via USB. On board ethernet is superior to this though so if you have a tower I wouldn't recommend this or an existing ethernet port if you want that maximum speed guaranteed!
