If I were to plug in 8 mics, I could balance them all out first before plugging into the computer, correct?

Yes the unit has an input volume controll for each channel. If that's the question? There are only 4 led lights per channel or track. 2 green 1 yellow & 1 red. I found with recording drums you can pin the yellow & bounce in the red with no clipping. Also I used Protools mixer to view the level & assigned the Compressor Limiter verry minimal to be sure no clipping occurd.

I You can use more than one on tbe same computer, yes.
