Can's seminal album, Unlimited Edition was originally issued in 1976. This remastered CD stands to replace the SACD edition, issued in 2004, which is no longer available.Unlimited Edition is a double compilation album, an expanded version of the 1974 LP Limited Edition which was limited to 15,000 copies (tracks 14-19 were added). The album collects unreleased music from throughout the band's history from 1968 until 1976, and both the band's major singers (Damo Suzuki and Malcolm Mooney) are featured.

An absolutely awesome gem of a double album
I am quite mystified/mortified why this double album from 1976 has not been given an in depth review but here goes. Firstly it is actually a combination of an early album of outtakes namely Limited Edition from 1974 & another albums worth of outtakes combined. It covers the era from 1968 to 1975 without a doubt the peak era of Can in terms of quantity and particularly quality of music. Both of the vocalists are represented namely the earlier (more repetitive rock orientated African American singer M. Mooney) and then the far more experimental (and vocals as another instrument) Japanese vocalists Damo Suzuki. The album starts out with an instrumental song titled Gomorrah from 1972 that is actually very difficult to describe except to liken it to laid back space rock. It goes straight into Doko E which sounds very ethnic & a combination of African rhythmic music & yet very Japanese with Damo's vocals. Without going into every song there are a number of songs which they have defined as E.F.S. or 'ethnological forgery series' that visit different world music from Asia and Africa and sound utterly convincing and beguiling. There are also great space ambient workouts like Isis from 1974 and a brilliant side long truly experimental rock composition at its most Avant garde (yet completely tuneful) Cutaway from 1969. Although the chronology of the songs are all over the place (which I usually detest) because every song is of such a high calibre and timeless the album presents as an extraordinarily consistent, interesting and stimulating musical journey. It is an album I have constantly listened to over many years and admired for its almost reckless and brilliant musical innovation and audacity. This album has never aged and still is one of the most uncompromising and yet listenable albums I have ever encountered. It is without doubt 1 of the top 7 Can albums and it seems stingy to only award 5 stars. If you love experimental rock music you should/need to check this album out. These outtakes are more incredible and pushing the envelope than other bands whole careers, Wow! what an awesome album from such a wonderfully innovative rock band 5/5 and an endless huge :)
