This laundry detergent is one of the few on the market that has the ingredient TAED (tetraacetylethylenediamine). When this ingredient is mixed with another laundry product that has sources of hydrogen peroxide, such as sodium percarbonate, it produce peracetic acid. Peracetic acid is a GREAT sanitizer. This process works best with powdered products, and especially when presoaked in a warm or hot wash. I mix it with Dollar Tree’s Brillo Basics oxy blast stain remover powder (fragrance free), or Dollar Tree’s boxed fragrance-free color safe powered bleach. It was really hard to find something that had this ingredient AND is a powder AND fragrance free. Defunkify is definitely now a staple in my laundry room for laundry that needs more than a typical wash and needs sanitizing.

I deal in textiles and frequently will come across a piece that has that musty old smell that can permeate old fibers and be very hard to remove. I recently picked up a mohair wool skirt that I didn't think was that bad when I was in the store, but by the time I got it home I realized it had a real funk to it. I scoured the internet looking for ideas, I spent one day soaking the item in my bathtub with a water and vinegar solution. That did a great job to start, but there was still an underlying musty smell. I ordered this from Amazon and I am sold. I took about a scoop and a half and diluted it in hot water and then I poured it into the cold water in my bathtub and soaked the skirt for about two hours. Took it out, dried it in the sun, and not only is the funky smell gone, but it also seems to have perked up the fibers in the skirt and made it feel soft again. Miracle worker? Maybe?!? I definitely won't be using this for my everyday detergent, but I have a couple other pieces that have been hanging around my house in purgatory because they're great pieces, but they just smell so I will absolutely be hitting those with this as well. Cannot recommend it enough.

Out of the gate I’ll say this stuff REALLY works and without excessive effort or unwanted lingering scent. This was acquired to rid my running shirts of the ever present “pit smell”. My clothes in general were not really stinky but the the stupid arm pit funk would just not come out with regular detergents. I used many different ones, none got it out. They seemed clean but then 10 min into a run or walk and I’d be smelling the stink and thinking, “Ummm No... there’s no way I already stink”. Now, there are many similar claiming products to Defunkify however, this is the only one I found that was truly unscented that did not cost and arm & a leg. In my front loader, I use one scoop and always use it on the pre-soak cycle for maximum effectiveness. I always fill initially with hot water to get it dissolved then finish cycle on clothing required temp. If you don’t have this flexibility, just predissovle in a bit of hot water then add to washer. My only gripe is the the zip seal sucks. It peels away from the inside of the bag thus rendering it useless so a bag clip is required. Not a big deal, but I’ll likely just put it in a another lidded container. One happy side benefit I noted was that it got OLD stains out... I mean OLD, like “holy poop, it got that out?” Old. As well it works great on greasy stuff we all inevitably get on our clothes while cooking or eating. My chef coats do quite well in the wash with this product. Not only is the sweat stink gone, 99% of the stains too. It has become part of my laundry routine now, but I just don’t understand why general laundry detergent formulations seem to fall so short and can’t “adjust” to this real need. I mean really, who says “Lets make a product that gets everything but sweat stink out?” Ridiculous...

This really takes the funk smell of most anything. But it’s slow on stains. You have to let it sit sometimes more than a day to get rid of stains.

I workout at OrangeTheory Fitness five times a week, my husband is a part-time Les Mill fitness instructor, we have two active teenagers who are multi-sport athletes, and a golden doodle who loves the mud. Our family creates a lot of smelly, dirty clothing. Workout gear, in particular, was just not smelling fresh, even when washing in hot with the addition of OxiClean, washing soda, and Borax to our regular free & clear Tide. I'm super sensitive to the smell of BO, and I was getting so frustrated. I like Bio-Kleen Bac-Out and it works well, but it's expensive to add to every load, and I don't really love the scent. Rockin' Green was just meh. Tide Hygienic Clean just seemed to be a stronger detergent, but includes nothing to actually attack smells at their root in the deep fibers of clothing. Defunkify just WORKS. You only need a couple small scoops for a super large load, and everything comes out smelling like NOTHING. That's what I want. I can't stand heavily perfumed detergents, and I'm so thankful this comes in unscented. It doesn't irritate my eczema-prone skin, and we're all happy that no one around here stinks. Just buy it. You'll be pleased.

Only stuff that works on my smelly teenage boys sports stuff! It’s expensive but saves so much time soaking and scrubbing and still not turning out great! It’s been a game changer! Would recommend for anyone with stubborn odour issues…
