When Someone Has a Very Serious Illness: Children Can Learn to Cope with Loss and Change

Great for long term illnesses
I would recommend this book for those family's who are dealing with a long term serious illness. Love the way it points out the positives and negatives about changes, even refers to changes in the seasons. I liked how it gave information for the parent to help the child. Only negative is that it assumed you were in a typical american household and we were separated for some time. While my 6 yr old daughters father was alive she would ask to do her special book. I told her she had to do the pages in order like the book suggests. Unfortunately, he passed suddenly after we received the book and she hasn't asked for the book since.

Great book for helping children process a family illness
This book is helping my 10 year old daughter process through my husband's illness, which now has him in hospice care and we anticipate his passing any time now. She is able to work through it when she feels like it, and all the opportunities to draw and write and diagram how her daddy's illness is affecting her is great therapy for her.

A Good Guide
This is a good supplement, especially when working with children and adolescents. It works well with younger children, and can be adapted for adolescents. It gives the child a different way to learn and communicate the changes they are experiencing, and as a therapist I've been able to build on that to better assist my clients. I have several of the Heegaard books and i've found all of them useful in that way.

Great resource
One of my favorite book series for younger children! Every page is engaging in helping the child understand. Lots of young children understand through the use of coloring and drawing and this book if used for just that.

Love that this book asks questions I wouldn't think of and that the kids can illustrate the pages. It says ages 4 and up, but my very verbal 3 year old could answer most of the questions. My 2 year old could answer some of them.

Great workbook
These workbooks are great for any young child trying to cope with a difficult situation. They are age appropriate and really help to explain in a way that kids connect with. I have quite a few of these.

Not for young children
It wasn’t quite what I had in mind. I bought it to read to my toddler as I’m living with a chronic disorder. It was definitely geared towards much older elementary age children. It is more in diary format drawing or writing the child’s feelings ect...

Use in my classroom to share with students and families going through challenging times due to a serious illness. Give parents something to start the conversation.

Highly recommended
I bought these for My grandkids when is was caring for them when their. Mum was hospitalised for months before she died. We spent an hour or so together doing one or two pages at a time over a few weeks. This helped them Tune into Each other's feelings. I look back on these now as do they sometimes to reflect on the journey they were on. We are no longer in this place of desperation. Most helpful. Recommended

Good book, totally worth it.
Amazing book to help small children age 6 to 10 to cope with mum's being critical ill. My 9 yo find it very useful to write about her feelings towards my critical illness and the drawings help a lot.Good approach and easy to a 9 yo to read.

Helps if you are creative.
This is an interesting book with space left for children to add their own pictures. Gives you free reign to be creative however can be quite daunting as it is not directive. I like that it has handwritten writing but I know some that would prefer it to be typed especially for the price. Not a cheap book.
