excellent for oil-based colored pencils
I find this sharpener produces a very nice, long tapered point that works very well for detailed colored-pencil work. An adjustable dial allows the user to control how sharp/blunt the final point is. I always use the sharpest setting, which works for most projects. The difference between various settings is not that dramatic. There are times where I need a point a bit sharper than the finest setting, but it is pretty quick and easy to manually sharpen the finest point to get it super sharp - it does not take much sanding or scribbling on the edge of the point to get to a very sharp point! For me, it works great for FC Polychromos, Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, Koh-I-Noor Progresso Woodless and even thick, soft Derwent Drawing pencils. I couldn't be happier. I've had successes and failures with Prismacolor. A typical failure would be a small break at the tip of the pencil (which isn't that big of a deal to me). But with one Prismacolor pencil, the sharpener never "stopped". At some point I realized that it had been sharpening for too long, and when I pulled the pencil out, about 1 inch had been removed, and the lead was broken at the base. But I've also had successes without a problem. Please keep in mind that the manufacturer says to *not* sharpen wax-based pencils…so issues with Prismacolor, or Derwent, are not a reflection of the quality of the sharpener - it works perfectly as advertised. I've never had breakage with oil-based pencils. I think this sharper does it's job well, and is an amazing value. It works much better than the long-point hand sharpeners I've tried. I'd highly recommend trying it out.

WOW ACTUALLY AS GOOD AS ADVERTIZED!
Wow truly shocked! I had to make a video and take some photos of the results which I've NEVER taken the time or energy to record a video for an Amazon purchase before. But this...this is so awesome! I didnt want others to doubt it's efficacy, and not buy it like I ALMOST did. Thinking "no way the only way you can get even close to that is with a ravor blade or other sharp blade thing to shave the pencil the lonnnnng ol' fashioned way". Which I've always despised doing, but really do consider the results a must for me when drawing. So shave away I went... Which is why I figured the best way would be to document the results of this "new school" way. So record and snap I did! This thing, Reaalllyyy does, make just as long and tapered points as shown! Just look at my beautiful Uni Hi pencil treated to a lovely cutting with this amazing pencil sharpener! Totally awesome! Even the blunt setting works just as advertised!

Good sharpener, but point isn't as long as pictures
This would be much higher if not for two problems. Let's start with the positive though. This sharpener is super easy to use. You do t have to hold the pencil, so you can hold the sharpener while turning the crank. This is nice cause that means I can take it anywhere with me as it is also really light weight. To choose how long you want the point you just turn a knob on the crank, and to un stick it of a lead breaks in it there is another knob below the crank that you turn to pull the mechanism out and remove blockage. I want everyone reading this to understand that for the price I am very happy with the product. HOWEVER, there were a couple of things that I was a little bothered by. This first and biggest problem is that when I received what was supposed to be a brand new sharpener, it already had shavings inside of it, so I got a sharpener that was used and returned. Aside from that, the longest point optio. Doesn't get as long as the pictures makes it look, but it's still better than my little sharpeners, and the instructions for the sharpener are not super clear which direction you turn the knob on the crank to make it longer or shorter. They tell you about it, but they don't tell you which way is shorter and which way is longer. Not a huge deal, but would be nice to have more clear directions. All in all I like this little guy, and despite it being previously used, I'll keep it

Makes beautiful points
This makes long, lovely sharp points. It hasn't broken any leads on me. Be extremely careful inserting (get it in there all the way without forcing) and removing. It self feeds during sharpening, so don't try to hold the pencil in. You know when it's finished because there is no longer any resistance when you turn the handle. You can sharpen the pencil with a shorter point if you want to. I don't know if it eats the pencils faster. I have a pretty light touch and don't tend to break leads, so the sharp point lasts a long time, and I don't have to sharpen as often as others. It's easy to bring the lead back to a needle sharp point without using the sharpener simply by rubbing it against a paper. I use the side of the pencil most of the time, so this is great for me for covering large swaths of area quickly. Because it's manual, you can carry it with you easily, although like any handle-based sharpener it is a bit bulky. I recommend it.

Good, but they send used sharpeners.
The sharpener is pretty good. I docked stars because this company is hell bent on sending used sharpeners. They sent me one that was dirty, dusty, and filled with pencil shavings so I asked for a replacement. I sent back the old one and got a “new” one. It still has shavings in it, but atleast it doesn’t look like it sat on someone’s desk for 2 months. Pretty alright sharpener.
