but it will be nice if it came with the current version pre-loaded
Works as advertised. Two caveats: - Firmware is of an older version, and it produces warning during programming. Not a big deal - firmware can be updated, but it will be nice if it came with the current version pre-loaded. - This ISP downloader/programmer is a naked board. It feels flimsy/can be broken, and you might want to protect it by putting in a suitable box etc.

OLD Firmware. You need another AVR to upgrade firmware!!!
I was trying to download a new boot loader to my Arduino mega 2560 that somehow became corrupted. I downloaded and installed the drivers. Connected it to the header on the board. Went into the Arduino software, set the chip, board and com port. Hit download boot loader, and got an error. "cannot set sck period". I double checked my connections. re installed driver and tried again. -Same error. I did some research online, and come to find out the firmware is out of date on these!. So i started to look into upgrading the firmware. Here is where it makes the programmer useless, you have to have a working avr programmer to upgrade the firmware!!! If I had a working AVR programmer, I wouldn't need this one. DUH! So basically I just wasted $10 on this piece of crap. Hope this helps to keep others from making the same mistake I did. What a waste of time and money!

I wish the outdated software had been indicated more clearly.
This may well work okay. It has for some people. Like several others, I was not able to use it as it is, because of the outdated software and lack of a way to update it. So I found another way to program my ATtiny chips for the moment. One of these days, I might look for a way to update the software so I can try it out. I'd bet if one of the USB ASP ISP devices in the list were to have "updated/current software compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux" in the description, they'd sell them by the buckets. But I dream of being rich, too.

Works as claimed but lacks documentation.
Bought this to reprogram my MKSBase 1.1 board for a 3D Printer after accidentally bricking it with a failed programming cycle. The RioRand®USB ASP ISP Downloader is just a standard USBASP and not a product made by RioRand as the product label seems to imply. Item photos are accurate. Item did not ship with any documentation (deducted 1 star for this), at least a pinout diagram would be great. Took some time to find the pinouts for the USBASP programmer online (search for USBASP LCSOFT). Drivers installed smoothly and works fine. Was able to reprogram Arduino back in to the MKSBase 1.1 board.

Should ship with current firmware
My programming software threw errors claiming that this unit needed a firmware update, and there were no instructions on how to do that. I also ended up needing to buy a separate 10-pin to 6-pin adapter to finish my project. That's not the fault of this unit but it would have been a nice, cheap thing to include in the package.

Pretty much does what it says on the box- Track down drivers for it and then use it like any other AVR programmer. It's cheap and I re-flashed some ATMEGA8a based ESCs for a robotics project easily.

It works for KK2.1.5
Did exactly what I needed it to, update the firmware on my KK2.1.5 board. Just gotta use some common sense. Cheers.
