Brand new.** A: I'm not sure about the 1/8th turn. Guess I didn't read the instructions, but I just turn it until I get a pretty good hiss. I will say that this is my second one. The first one worked fine for a while and then got to where it wouldn't light. Passed it to my grandson who got it working again. My second one has been working just fine for a while now. I made a little cap out of PVC for the flame end when it's not in use to keep critters out of it. (Think that might be why I started having trouble with the first one. Dunno.) To wrap up, I'd try fiddling with the flow valve and if I still couldn't get it to work I'd pass it on to a grandkid and get another. Couple of other things. There are like 50 vendors selling these things. They all look just the same. Also, it takes a lot of time (and propane) to exterminate one little weed. The ones we're after are in a compacted landscape surface. I've started just kicking the top of the weed off it's root and then charring the top of the root. Seems to work and takes a lot less time/propane. **Q: Lighter doesn’t work, is there a trick to get it to work** A: No, I bought one which didn’t work from the start and returned /replaced it with another that failed after the first couple uses.
