Just installed my first one. They are sturdily made, and they're not tiny. You can bend the "legs" to get them to fit smaller diameter pipes.

Helps keep drain working

These downspout strainers are very heavy and solid. I needed to bend the bottom prongs a bit to fit the downspout well, but it was easy to do by hand. You may need to lift your shingles up slightly to get the strainer in - wait for a warm day when the shingles are soft and pliable. These are much more solid than either plastic strainers or the expanded metal ones with the much smaller diamond openings that are formed from flat sheets of expanded metal. I had tried the expanded metal type when we first bought our home 20+ years ago and they quickly plugged up and need to be cleaned in no time. I later switched to this type years ago and they allow smaller debris to pass through (small stuff that won't clog your downspouts or pipes) but block large leaves and other debris. Yes - you may have to periodically clear them after a heavy drop of leaves or helicopters. Keep in mind the purpose of these strainers is to keep your downspouts and pipes clear - they do not keep your gutters clear (you need to buy gutter guards for that). But with the generous openings, the time between cleanings is greatly extended compared to the expanded metal type. Our old strainers of a similar type were galvanized steel, not stainless, and it was time to replace them. This type was not available from local stores any longer, so I was glad to find them here.

We’re using these as sewer vent pipe covers on the roof to prevent squirrels, etc., from dropping things down those pipes like 4 inch raw walnuts, which are covered by this weird green skin and are almost as big as the pipe itself! And these covers are perfect because they’re not flat whereby leaves and debris, ice etc… might clog them and keep the gases from escaping. These are curved and the openings are big enough to let gases out but not big enough to let the giant nuts down the pipes lol! It amazes me because how do they think they’re going to get the nuts back after they put them down the pipe?, seems crazy to me , it’s like they’ll stash them anywhere without thinking the whole situation through! like dude, you’re not gonna be able to get them out of there. They’re gone! 😂

These stainless steel gutter guards are the third type I've tried.The first type, the mesh guard, clogged too easily with dirt, so there was no draining action at all.The second type, bought at a big box store, has the same design, but is already rusting after 1 season. (See first picture.)Hopefully the third time will be a charm. I took a photo of the previous guard and the new stainless guard together (second pic) to show how much sturdier the new ones are. They cost more, but if they last more than 2 years, then it will be more economical in the long run.

These are well made of heavy duty stainless steel and I wish I could have kept them. I measured my downspout opening and the 3” ones fit my 2.5” inside diameter opening. The problem was the larger globe top on these guards is too big to fit between the front of the roof drip edge and the front of the gutter. I could have unscrewed the gutter to lower them so these would fit, but that would make taking off for cleaning a pain. Also, the top globe part is too rigid to bend to fit. The lower legs bend easily for fitting in downspouts. These would be 5 stars if they fit and I think they would be less prone to clogging than the standard wire mesh kind. If they made these without the globe top they would be a more universal fit.

These were just what I needed to try and be proactive and avoid downspout clogs. I much preferred to spend more and buy heavy duty guards with larger holes to prevent needless clogging of the guard itself. I believe these will do the job of keeping large things out of the downspouts, while allowing smaller things that will flow through the downspout to get through so we don't need to clean the gutter guards as often.The seller also proactively reached out to make sure we knew how these should fit and how to resolve any issues we had.
