IDEAL Electrical 45-605 PrepPRO Coax/UTP Cable Stripper

I kept cutting all of the wires because I was turning it too many times. Three or four seems to be the right number. Also, manually peel off the covering instead of using the tool to pull it off. Works much better that way. Very effective once you get the hang of it. I bought a 6-foot length of coax to play with it to get comfortable with its workings.

I initially thought a custom-made coax stripper was gimmicky, but this is just as easy to use as everyone says, and trying to prep the cable correctly with a knife is a huge pain. Even if you're only doing one cable, it's worth the $10 to be sure it's all right, not prick your finger on bits of wire, and not dull your knife on the braid.I used this on quad shielded cable with PPC EX6PLUS connectors, and it worked very well. I did have to do a second pass to get the outer foil. The tool got the outer insulation and braid, I pulled off the pieces, and then I ran the tool around it again to cut the foil, leaving the inner braid to fold back.

Edit: I've continued to buy these strippers, they're excellent. I'm purchasing for a telco. Made multiple buys since my initial purchase. Our techs love them. Works great for cat6. I used to be sold on the grey strippers with the adjustable screw in the nose, not anymore. I've yet to replace a blade cartridge on these in 2 years. We're onboarding techs regularly, this stripper is the go-to. Just buy these and don't look back.I work for a FTTH telco, our technicians are primarily using this stripper for cat5e. I was hesitant to purchase this for them as the depth isn't adjustable, I was worried they'd cut too deep and get into the twisted pairs. As it turns out, not really a concern.Spin it once around, cuts the jacket perfectly, doesn't get into the twisted pairs. I've seen a couple of reviews stating the cartridges are a snug fit, hard to swap around. That's true, the one not in use has a really snug fit in the tool body. We've found that if you use one cartridge to pop the other out (one goes in as the other goes out) it's not really an issue. Liked it well enough that I purchased one for myself.

I bought this for work as I have an occasional need to make coax cables in custom lengths. It's easy to use and works well, just pop in the removable die to match the cable you're using, squeeze it open and let it close on the cable, then give it a twirl and slide it off, perfect strip every time. My only complaint is that it doesn't open very far making it a little tricky sometimes to extract the removed bits of insulation after using.

This stripper is excellent. This stripper comes with 2 "dies". I have only used the Coax, I have not tried the cat5 die yet. Also, I have only tried stripping RG6 cables, but have done both RG6, and Quad Shied RG6. I have not tried with RG59.I have purchased cheaper strippers (ultimately spending more than the cost of this one) that work in a similar fashion, thinking it doesn't matter... stripping is stripping right? Not so...This device has a spring that provides the required pressure to cut through the coax cable, and doesn't require you to provide your own pressure like some cheaper strippers I have used. The directions state to just place the cable in the cutting die and "rotate" the tool 3 or 4 times. I tried that with RG6 Quad shield and 4 times worked perfectly. I tried it with RG 6 (not quad shield) and for me and my cable brand, 4 times was too many, and it cut the outer grounding braid. 3 times was much better, but even then there were still a few strands of braid betting cut. 2 times was the key for me and the cable brand I was using. At 2 times it just barely made it through. Every cable brand is going to be slightly different, so you will have to experiment for the perfect amount of turns, but once you figure that out, it is very repeatable.I am glad I finally found this model, and it is well worth the added cost up front.

I ordered this because of friend recommendation.I like it a lot. Super easy to strip cable.I use it for Cat 5e and Cat6. It works awesome.One warning- when you do your turn around the cable, do not go mere then 1 full revolution, otherwise it has enough tension in the built-in spring that it will cat through the small gauge wire inside. Happened to me few times.After I started paying attention to the revolution around the cable, it never happened again.After many installs, I highly recommend it. Awesome little tool.I want to try it on a coax now. It says it works on it too.
