Precision Cordless Electric Screwdriver #500 with Six Bits and Quick Change Chuck, Handles Difficult, Repetitive Screw-Fastening Jobs

First off this is actually a very nice precision powered driver. It comes with a few common bits that are very helpful to get you going. The handle and feel of the unit overall is good. those with large and small hands alike should find themselves comfortable with this device. This is a precision screwdriver, please make sure you are getting it for the right reason. this is for working on small finely details projects that. the rotational speed of the bit is not fast nor should it be, but it has some good torq, so if you are driving into a soft material make sure you stop just before the end and finish turning by hand. When not powered the bit is pretty much locked so you can tighten it down by hand without the risk of stripping anything. **Optional Bits** This was one of the biggest issues i have read when i went through the reviews, well i want to tell you all that there are lots of options and i will give you 2 VERY amazing ones right now. This driver is the "perfect' companion to the iFixit kits. Both the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit and just the iFixit 54 Bit Driver Kit come with a crap ton of bits. Actually each comes with 54. In addition the top row of bits in each kit are varies sized adapters so you can use any bits sized from 2mm up to 5mm in this precision screw driver. Buying this driver with one of those sets is really a match made in heaven. I have the pro kit and this driver and i have yet to find something i cant tackle. The battery life of the driver is pretty good too it lasts me quite a while. i haven't actually times it but others have reported ~100 hours or so and i cant disagree with that. Im currently using the supplied Alkaline batteries, and once i can find my AAA NiMH batteries i will be giving those a try. Just received this tool and am very impressed with everything about it. Even the packaging was excellent. As for the screwdriver, I think the quality is amazing! It's slim & light, with a 'rubberized' holding area & just the right balance. I've found that if you hold it like a pen, and use the 'thumb' as the delegated switch operator it's super easy to use. The sound is almost exactly like a 'dentist's' drill. I've read some reviews complaining about it being too slow. Well, to remove screws it's plenty fast enough. Far better than by hand. What really amazed me was the torque power for such a light tool! I bought it figuring I would use it only for delicate jobs (computer type jobs, things like that), but I figured I'd try it out also on some standard screw removals. I tested it on the screws that hold together my big tape measure and it had no problem even "starting" (breaking the hold as it's referred to) the screws. Then I tried it on my computer station "hold together screws" and it did just as easy a job as the other. This is an exceptionally fine tool. I checked it out from top to bottom and can honestly say it's quality is exceptional. It comes with two batteries which actually "work" (not the usual case with "supplied batteries" in most items). It comes with six bits which are very good quality (two slot, two philips, & two star, all in a neat little plastic holder). For $20 you can't beat it! I think it's actually worth more. I can't comment on it's longevity yet but will update accordingly. One thing I think worth commenting on is the cap that screws on after you install the batteries. I've found that usually a cheaper, less quality tool has a cap that just doesn't fit or seat perfectly, and after just one or two turns, it's on...but on this one the tap & dye work done for the threads is near precision work. It takes about thirteen turns to seat this cap snuggly. This may not seem an important point to some, but it tells me this was quality built. Lastly, these kinds of small cordless screwdrivers are rare to come by. I'm glad I got it now. If you're looking for one, this is the one to get. Update 4/6/2012: I can't stop saying enough good things about this tool. I am tempted to buy another one just in case they become unavailable or are discontinued from production. I have always loved 'quality tools', regardless of the type. This cordless screwdriver is such a tool. It's made for the specific task of placing or removing small screws. It's not an "auto mechanic's" screwdriver, nor is it one you would build a deck, swingset, etc. with either. It is a small, beautifully engineered, quality made instrument for the task mentioned. But, it actually does remove screws that you wouldn't expect it to. Just for the fun of 'using it' I have randomly tested it's power on various screws around my house and it's fantastic. SO, how much MORE FANTASTIC on the small simple screws it was designed for? I can only say in response to those reviews that say "it's too slow"...or "doesn't have the torque". It's one of the best tools I've owned to do exactly (plus) what its' supposed to do. I LOVE IT. Period.

This automatic mini screwdriver at first glance looks like one of those tools you would have little use for. Something you might toss in your toolbox or drawer and forget about. I know because that’s what I did! Then when I took on a new position as a solar equipment installer I needed a tiny screwdriver to torque these itty bitty terminal screws for 22 gauge wires. I didn’t have anything substantial, just one of those little pocket screwdrivers you find lying around. I took it to work with me and it was excellent! So easy to use, precise and pretty rugged. I have to hold these tiny 22 gauge wires in the terminal with one hand and tighten the screw with the other. This makes the frustratingly precise job so easy. Just push the switch forward or backwards to operate and it gets the screws tight. It comes with 5 precise interchangeable bits from small to tiny Phillips and flathead. Perfect for thermostat wires, electronics any tiny jobs. The batteries last a long time too and for $22, a tool that makes your job way easier is worth every penny. I had mine for years left in a drawer and have used it daily for the past 3 years without failing. I’m getting another one as a backup because my coworker always borrows it and you know how other people treat your tools! I gave it 4 stars only because I would like it better if it were made of higher impact plastic, like Polycarbonate or reinforced Nylon like what’s used for power tools. Other than that it’s a well made reliable tool.

About six years ago I found and bought my first mini powered screwdriver, a brand called the "iGo." The iGo was the same in concept as this Ultra Tech in that it was a super mini screwdriver, with small driver bits (albeit the iGo bit are not as small as the Ultra Tech). The iGo is powered by two AAA batteries. Back then the iGo was the only miniature battery powered screwdriver on the market (at least that I could find). There were plenty of large AA battery powered drivers (that use four batteries), for example Black & Decker's drivers. But those are powerful screwdrivers meant for heavy duty jobs such as inserting wood screws into hardwood. In 2004, when I was first researching and looking for a battery powered mini screwdriver, I wanted something for delicate, small jobs such as working on computers or small electronic devices. (The Black & Decker type drivers are too big, cumbersome and powerful to work on small screws, plus those powered screwdrivers don't come with bits small enough to fit into small screws.) What size screws am I talking about? Look on your netbook or notebook computer case, to see the screws I am talking about. Enter the iGo powered screwdriver. Those have served me well all these years and I am still using the original two I bought back then. (Actually, I bought five of them and gave two as gifts. By the way, geeks love these powered mini screwdrivers. My friend gave one to her sister's new husband at their wedding reception, part of a box of gifts. Everyone at the reception was asking to play with the screwdriver and he caught two of his guests trying to "forget" they had the driver, by putting it in their pockets. Fast forward to three weeks ago when I decided to see if there were any new powered miniature screwdrivers on the market. A search yielded pay dirt when I found this "General Ultra Tech Power Precision Screwdriver" (that's a mouthful but that's the official name of it). I read the description and was impressed that this was obviously a better product than my iGo (even though the iGo was only $5 per driver and it has worked flawlessly). What I liked about this General Ultra Tech is that it comes with six screwdriver bits, including two torx bits (T5 and T6 that typically fit cell phones and small electronics). The bits case has two very small flathead and two small Phillips head bits. The chuck that the bits fit into are proprietary to the Ultra Tech bits. That means the full size bits that come on bigger drivers won't fit. Besides, bits such as those on a Black & Decker driver are too big to work on small precision screws. And to be sure, a full-sized powered driver would strip screw threads, holes, or heads because there's simply too much power driving the screw. Sidenote: The iGo driver also has a proprietary chuck and bit. The iGo came with two bits, a flathead and a Phillips, that conveniently stores inside the driver, so you don't lose or misplace them. Also, the iGo bits and chuck are magnetized, a handy feature when working in tight spaces or difficult to access screw holes. (This General Ultra Tech is not magnetized.) Impressions of the Ultra tech: This is a great driver. It was a well thought out design and it's perfect for doing precision work. For example: -- You grip it like holding a pen. Because it's a small diameter device, you can hold it and easily "target" the screw you are working with. -- When using the driver your thumb is conveniently on the power switch. So you can power the switch to screw or unscrew without having to twist or contort your grip to operate the power switch. -- The driver at the base is curved inward, like many pens that advertise a comfortable grip design. So when holding the driver with your fingers it's really a natural grip. -- Lastly on the grip or feel in the hand, the driver body is 6" long and about the diameter of a U.S. dime. So when holding it, the top half rests on your hand, in between the thumb and forefinger. (This is similar to holding a pen.) This results in your being able to hold the driver firm and steady when using the driver. All in all, the form factor is a great design and pleasure to use. Now on performance. I see some people criticize this as being under powered or incapable of driving certain screws. Excuse me folks, first of all, this is for precision work, not driving bolts or screws into hardwood or metal. This driver has more than enough power to work on any electronic device's screws. If you want more power, trust me, you are going to strip the screw or female threads of whatever you are working on. True, the driver head has a slight degree of of wobble indicating that these are not machined parts, where tolerances need to be precise. If the driver contained machined parts these drivers would cost a lot more than $20 to $25. How do I know this? There's a DSLR camera CMOS sensor cleaner that kind of looks the same as this driver, it's a powered pen device that spins fibers at about 10,000 rpm. Those sensor cleaners cost about $100 minimum. Why? Mainly it's because the parts that spin or turn have to be very precise since it will be accessing the insides of a digital camera. The pen obviously contains machined parts and that's why it cost so much. There's some guy on a lathe shaping those precision parts. He has has to be paid. The Ultra Tech driver is powered by two AAA batteries. I have found on my iGo, because I am not using it that much (maybe 100 times a year) that a set of AAA batteries last me over two years. The driver is still working at that point, but just not as fast or powerful as with a fresh set of batteries. The package advertises "10+ hours of power" but I imagine that simply means that if you ran the motor for ten hours while the motor is still technically turning at hour ten, by that time the driver won't work. Obviously, at hour 7 or 8 the driving capabilities are weak or lacking torque (screw turning ability) so it's best to swap out the batteries then and not to wait until the batteries are completely dead. Bonus Tip: It's best to use rechargeable batteries in devices like this. When you feel that the driver is suffering power loss (getting weaker at driving screws) simply replace the batteries and recharge the old ones. I recommend you get Sanyo's ENELoop rechargeable batteries, by the way. IMHO those are the best rechargeable batteries on the market. (Why? Well for one thing, ENELoop batteries don't discharge much when sitting in a drawer, for example. At least not at the same rate as regular rechargeable batteries. "Screw driving"... I was very impressed. The bits are small for precision screws and detailed work. And the smallest driver bit even fit eyeglass screws!! Now that's a precision, powered screwdriver. What will keep you from doing "big jobs" with this driver is that the bits are very small, so it can't be used for screws bigger than what you see on your notebook computer, the screws that keep the case together. Bonus Tip: Do NOT use this screwdriver in powered mode to completely drive in a screw, the driver's motor is too powerful and will strip threads or the screw. When you get close to the where the screw is almost completely screwed in, gently twist the driver to manually finish the job. (When not in powered mode the driver handle "locks" the bit and you can manually turn the driver. Overall impressions: This is a great screwdriver to have in one's precision tools box. It performs very well and will make short work in removing screws in tight places or when removing lots of screws at once, such as a notebook computer case (for example, the bottom of notebook computers have anywhere from 15 to 30 screws! Who wants to loosen and tighten those with a manual screwdriver). I am so impressed I am buying a few more to give as gifts this 2010 holiday season.

I got this for my RC cars and well it was the perfect tool for the hobby! But this product is almost a 1 time use and trash . Durability is prob. Worst i have seen in anything for a lomg period of time now. Have had this for only a few days and maybe have turned approx. 26-27 screws on 1 rc car body from what i can count , and thats on and off . I never over tighten or abused this tool as i find its strength to have been perfect and you do not want to over tighten anything on expensive rc car or any car for that matter. This tightened about right at hand tight which was perfect and i could go by later and tighten all to spec by hand . So it was more for a speed of process for me . But the gears within this screwdriver are thin , weak, not pinned well... started to slip and miss align thus it just slipped and does nothing but that now . It did nog even tighten the screw halfway when it did that and this body skin is almost paper-plate thin or less , so their was like almost no resistance at all . Thats how cheap, none durable and disposable this thing is . with right parts inside , this tool would be quite amazing , def. for RC car ,plane, boat hobby. I do not recommend this product in anyway nor will i ever purchase it again due to poor the quality internal motor gears . Which is its weak point. Needs thicker more durable gears and bigger teeth on gears and would solve the issue. I am going to convert this new table paper weight into a stronger system by using its parts and using a high torque servo to control my forward/reverse . At least plastic gears in even micro servos can far outperform this tool.

Most of the things I take apart of put together require small screwdrivers, which are often difficult to turn and hard on the hands. This product is handy for those wanting a break for the hands, but there is definitely room for improvement. Basic functionality is solid: does what it says on the tin. Nothing fancy here; you can't set the torque or change the speed, which is thankfully slow enough to control but fast enough to save some time. You'll be using your thumb a lot to push the lever up and and down for forward and reverse. The most significant gripe I have is that instead of using a 4mm hex drive for which 3rd party bits are readily available, this tool uses what appears to be a 1/8 inch hex drive, making it almost certainly incompatible with one's existing collection of interchangeable precision bits. I have yet to see 1/8" hex drive bits for sale; let me know if you do. As such, you are limited to the six bits General provides: Philips 0 and 00, slotted 1/8" and 1/16", and Torx 5 and 6. That's pretty good for most tasks, but frustrating if you were hoping to shelve your human-powered screwdrivers. Replacement sets are available from General, but I did not see a wider selection of bits. Certain other online vendors try to address the lack of variety by including a 3rd party universal keyless chuck, but the price is much higher, and the instruction to use glue to hold the chuck in place sounded kludgy, so I bought from Amazon after all.

Son lost my original 8-year-old one so I know it will last. Excellent precision driver. The use of AAA batteries makes it convenient for a junk drawer (no need to worry about charge). The included bits handle most ordinary tasks an if you have a set of 5mm security bits you should be good to remove just about any tiny screw on earth

I just purchased my second one of these. The first one broke after about 6 months of use. So if it only lasted 6 months why 5 stars you may ask, well it is because I was extremely hard on this little thing and am impressed it lasted that long. I have used it to repair at least a dozen laptops, but the main use for this was to assemble heavy duty cable harness. Each harness has two screws that first need to be loosened then tighten back down after assembly. All in all I would say that I loosened and tightened over 2,000 of these screws. It did the job wonderfully! If there were any "complaints" it would be battery life and speed. But honestly considering it's size and it uses AAA batteries neither of these "complaints" are really a surprise. Overall, if I get as much useable out of the second one as I did the first, will definitely buy another when this one breaks.
