Superior quality and performance for its price point!
Very easy to use, great sound quality! This recorder has been more than satisfying for its price point! The device and it's USB attachment are both very compact - would fit easily in your pocket. For such a small display screen, the functions are still clear and simple to read. I use mine for clinical recordings, and so far it has been able to capture everything I've wanted it to. I also feel very confident that once a sound file is deleted, it cannot be retrieved - which is great for protecting patient information, but perhaps not so great if you delete a file too hastily? But then, that would be a case of user error rather than any reason to complain about product quality :) Speaking of user error...I once accidentally left mine turned on over an entire weekend, and there was barely any drain on the battery! A very efficient little recorder!

Great recorder for the money
This is a great tool for a singer or anyone that needs to record lectures or writers that need to record ideas. I sing in an a cappella quartet and listening is essential to improving our performance. I record all of our rehearsals. I have literally a hundred hours already in this recorder and it hasn't warned me that it's close to being full. It has an attachment to upload it to my computer which I probably will do soon, but it's great for me to carry around and listen to while I'm driving. I plug it into my aux jack on my stereo and the sound is pretty great. I have also been to education events and have recorded the entire lecture (some are days long) and it's great to be able to listen to them over again to get better detail. The recording quality is pretty good - I wouldn't use it to record something for performance, but it is great for learning. It is user friendly. The only thing I wish is that the display were back lit so I could see it in the dark in the car.

Good enough to do what you need it to do
I just got this to conduct phone interviews for my blog and to record my standup comedy performances. So far, it's easy to use EXCEPT for the fact that the instructions are TERRIBLE! I'm still learning how to use this device. I don't know what all it can do. BUT it has already worked exceptionally well for my phone interviews (i just used it yesterday). I didn't order a pickup mic but I did press record and turn my cell phone on speaker phone...and it picked up all of the sound in the room (including me tapping my feet because I was nervous). It also was VERY EASY to transfer the file from my phone interview to my Macbook. I just did a drag and drop when I located the file and was able to save and rename the file to iTunes. The mic seems to be very sensitive because when I listen to me practice my set, I can hear me swallowing! I haven't figured out how to rename the recording files on the device yet. But overall, it seems to do what I need it to do. SO far, SO good.

An Excellent, Feature Loaded Recorder
I finally had to retire my 1985 Olympus Pearlcorder J300 tape model which I loved. I read the reviews of the new digital recorders and decided to stay with Olympus. Folks, this is a great voice recorder. Contrary to what you read here from people who don't read the manual, it does indeed have Voice Activation and a record Pause. The 66 page VN-722 manual is online. The menu functions are easy to use. The display is excellent and so are the many features. It is tiny and loaded with the stuff you want and need. The recording is crystal clear and the playback is loud enough. It has inputs for a mic and standard headphones. I'm amazed at the functionality, ease of use, and extreme light weight of this precision recorder compared to the old technology I was so hesitant to discard. On Amazon they say a newer model, WS852, is available. People are not happy with the low playback volume on that model so be careful. I doubt any will need to add a micro card as the VN722PC will record for 67 hours but a slot is available. It comes with a micro USB connector and lanyard. If you need a high quality recorder this may be the one for you.

Great value, best functionality.
I shopped a lot of different recorders for recording lectures at university and I didn't necessarily set out to save money on it but this one seems to be the best value for the money. I like the memory card option- I purchased a 32 GB memory card separately and I'm really happy with that choice. I recorded an entire school quarter of lectures for 4 classes that had sessions 2-3 times a week and there's still plenty of room left on the memory card for another entire quarter. The simple menus and buttons are easy to use. It was one of very few recorders I could find that gave you the option of putting the recording files into individual folders. It has 5 folders which was perfect for me to separate all my classes and have an extra for personal recordings. I only have 2 things that I'm not fully happy with- I wish the microphone were more sensitive or noise cancelling. Sometimes in a lecture hall there is background noise, doors slamming, people sneezing, whatever and it makes it hard to hear the lecturer when you play it back later. The other thing is that I wish the volume would turn up higher. I connect it to my car stereo with an auxiliary cord so that I can listen to lectures while I'm driving and with the road noise, even if I turn both the device and my car stereo volume to max, sometimes it's still hard to hear. Otherwise, quite happy with the purchase and expect it to serve me well for several more school terms.

After using this unit for few of my lectures, I am satisfied. But just. what i think: - ergonomics of operation. things are very easy to work around with, like menu, setting, and record operations. - size, weight. it's very light and for how it weighs, it seems to be built very well and sturdy. the built-in stand is still a questionable in terms of durability (after all, it's still a plastic). - quality of sound. for what it's worth, it is decent. it's not greatest nor impressive, but it does the job well. I think if you have a money to spend $70 (at the time of purchase) on this, might as well try spending extra $30 and get Tascam DR-05 or Zoom H1. The YouTube reviews on those items are far superior in quality and abundance compared to this. ---> I am sort of tempted to return this and get a Tascam DR-05 but my objective was to get a good recorder, and this does a damn good job with it. what I wish it could do or was different: - Although I bought this for lecture recording, there are still small bit of white noise even with kick-stand up or with external mic (explained below) plugged in. Although nowadays, any room have AC running so that's hard to eliminate but you do hear something even in silent room. the external mic helps but that poses another problem, which is... - yes, it does record in Stereo sound. but if you buy the suggested item, Olympus ME-52 Noise Cancelling lavalier microphone, it will ONLY RECORD IN MONO SOUND (left). This can be fixed by audio-editing software but.... why can't we just... have stereo? *sad face* - it runs on 2*AAA batteries. Although these battery types are very common, i still wished it ran on some kind of Li-ion rechargㄷable battery. Personal preference. For what I have used this unit for, it fulfills the duty as handy voice recorder for university students who want a voice recorder. Mind you, you might have to sit rather closer to the front for better audio quality, but it does pick up audio well enough to be audible. // in a nutshell, I believe in buying a high quality once and using it for lifetime. This is great product, but with the things that I'm not most satisfied with, this is only slightly better than a smartphone recorder. I personally would return this and go for something else for a little more money. BUT I'm also poor..... So should YOU buy this? - Do you need a voice recorder, and not just a smartphone app? - Must it be simple to use, but have some settings available for different environmental conditions? - Do you need/want expandable Micro SD slot (up to 32 GB) storage option? - You don't care if it has no LED back-light or Pro-level audio quality. - You (are likely a student and) don't have more than $100 to spend on.... if you answered yes to all, then this will be a very good option to consider.

I use it for lecture recording. It's easy to set up and easy to use. Most of all, the quality of recorded sound is excellent. The only tiny complaint I have is the design of the buttons - one could accidentally press the Stop button without knowing and it stops recording.

I really like this little recorder. I bought it mostly to record progress in my commercial gardens so I constantly use this outside. Many times in a very windy situation, this recorder works fantastically with very little wind noise. Exceeded my expectations.
