Introducing the New Testament: Its Literature and Theology

I am using this book for a class at Fuller and would recommend it for reading and study as a basic introduction to the New Testament. However, the pages started pulling away from the binding shortly after the thirty-day return policy expired. You might want to buy the ebook instead. I prefer to have a book I can highlight in but the hardback copy is too much money to have it break apart so soon after purchase. I am not sure a book with a spine this thick can last for any length of time and as a textbook, I use it almost daily.

Although I took theology courses as an undergraduate at the Jesuit-run Boston College, this book was less rewarding than I'd hoped. Like many studies of the New Testament, it starts too late in the story. What the reader really needs up front is a thorough introduction to the beliefs, ethics, rituals, and structure of first-century Judaism as it was practiced in Jerusalem, Galilee, and Judea. Without that essential background, it's hard to understand precisely what Jesus was reacting against in his debates with the Temple officials -- what he was trying to get away from in establishing a new movement. A book like Geza Vermes's "Jesus the Jew" helps fill in that dead-zone in Christian understanding of what Jesus, as a first-century Jew, knew and understood his home religion to be, and what made him risk everything to change it.

I was required to get this book for my New Testament Literature class. At first, I wasn't reading it at all. I started to read it when I realized that all of the quizzes were based on the text.It was very informative on the New Testament to say the least. If you are a student or are looking into a New Testament theology class, I HIGHLY recommend that you at least check out this book. It will help you think an entirely new way about the NT.

I have found this to be a well-written, interesting book. I am taking a course through our church and this is our textbook. It is one thing to read the Word of God; it is another to understand it. This book helps you do just that. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in diving deeper into the Bible and, specifically, the New Testament.

Very informative, great info... hopefully you professor will supplement the book with others or scripture as the chapters tend to be very long.

This was the first book I purchased when I started Bible college (at Fuller). It's a simple but concise introduction to the New Testament, especially for readers such as myself who do not have any formal training in theology. And a bonus is that it comes on the Kindle!

it served the purpose and was a good read for the class it was needed for. I was able to keep up with my fellow classmates and the lessons in class.

At first sight I was a little wary of this book as I thought it would be a bit too academic for my style of learning - but I couldn't have been more wrong. It is very comprehensive and yet incredibly accessible and understandable. It's a book that is good for a long reading session and yet is also good to pick up and put down. I would recommend for anyone studying theology or indeed anyone just wanting a really good insight into the New Testament. I'm sure I shall refer to this book again and again.

Been using the book for an NT course and so far it's been very good. Good mix of depth and ability to read

This provides great history, commentary and overall picture of the new testament at the time of the apostles. It goes in depth about genres, is not biased to certain views and links the New Testament to the Old, and to Qumran scrolls, etc.
