Exciting Topic, Boring Book
Lost Lands, Forgotten Realms: Sunken Continents, Vanished Cities, and the Kingdoms That History Misplaced It's hard to believe that anyone could take a topic as exciting as this one and create a boring book, but Dr. Curran succeeded in doing so. He is up on the current research, but the writing is too academic for the subject. It sounds as if he took a graduate research paper, removed the documentation, and left the text basically unchanged. He omitted the most famous story about the inundation of Ys, in which the king's daughter deliberately opened the flood gates, although he tiptoes around the story and almost but not quite includes it. Some of his material is out of the order appropriate for a popular book, although it is in the proper order for academic writing. Altogether, I was disappointed in this book. As I have bought it I'm keeping it rather than discarding it, and may read it again someday when stuck in bed after surgery, but if I had first read it in the library I wouldn't have bought a copy.

Not impressed
I was simply not impressed with this book. To the book's credit I must say that the book covers a lot of territory and gives many starting points for further exploration, but while it covers much territory it doesn't provide much more information than one could obtain by doing a small amount of research on the internet. I bought the book because of an interest in the legend of Hi- Brasil - which is covered in the book. The book was a quick read, but left me wanting something with more depth. If you have little familiarity with the topic the book might be a good place to start - if you've been interested in the topic for a while and have already done some research , you might be disappointed as I was. I would recommend it to someone as a beginners guide.

Now I know more about the orign of places, names found in myths and legends
This book describes the origin of many of the names, places from myths and legends I have heard about since childhood. The author has done a lot of research and presented in such away that it is easy to read.It is also very interesting the effect that so called stories of lost treasures and cities have had on people in history. Everyone dreams of finding that El Dorado or the fountain of youth, but some people have believed it enough to have risked their lives.Good read.

Cool book
I really enjoyed this book, but the author doesn't always go into enough detail for me. He introduces many theories (like vanishing Irish cities actually a reflection from somewhere else in the world) but he doesn't explain it much more, as if we should already know about it. Very interesting book, but like most books, it has its flaws.

I must have read this cover to cover in the bookstore
And when I went to buy it, despite reading it thoroughly, well Morphy's law it disappeared. So, I'll probably get it from here. Now, IMHO, it's a real awesome read for people who like the concept, the romance of "Lost Lands". It isn't just the cliche Atlantis + Lemuria, not that they aren't cool, it goes through a lot of other lost places most have never heard of, like Irem:-)So, if you like this stuff, this book is a very good read with nice illustrations.

An enjoyable introduction to many lost lands
This was a good little book I picked up on a whim. Mr Curan covers a lot of ground, but doesn't go into a lot of depth about any of the areas. I viewed this as a pleasent summer read, and a starting place for more research.

Amazing Research took place to write this book!
Phenomenal information about long-forgotten lands that we remember hearing about from time to time. So much has been lost from generation to generation and the focus is no longer on ancient history, but it needs to be. There are truths we can all learn in this mythological book based on the old stories and legends.I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it for a good winter read!bETH

Lost Lands
A very interesting read on how some Myths & Legends may have come about such as Atlantis, El Dorado. How some of these places may have vanished due to change in landfall/quakes. It covers a diverse range of different cultural beliefs.

beautifuly written
i love anything to do with myth's,legend and folklore, this isn't the most in depth book but it is insightful and written with obviously great love for all thing magical and otherworldly. The main reason i bought this book though is because im a huge fan of Ian Daniels his art work is beautifully magical and dark. there are some magnificent illustrations in this book and they worked well with the writing.if your looking for more Ian Daniels id suggest his dark fairies book and the vampire tarot card he illustrated you can also see some more of his art work on the i do believe website.

Still Reading...
This turned into a bathroom book... lol Only because I found I was forcing myself to read the factual context that just drivaled on and on.. I just wish there was some story telling aspect within the novel to capture my interest from cover to cover. I will eventually finish it, but it reminds me of the countless nights I had to cram for exams in College with useless information that I have partly forgotten about. If there is nothing to pique the imagination, no matter what you write, unless all your readers have eidetic memories; not very much will be retained. And thus your book will be forgotten.
