how does this eyelash curler compare to the laura mercier curler?

I cannot compare them because I never use Laura Mercier curler.

Does this have the sheid for your lids, or can you get right up to your lash line. I've have long lashes naturally& I need to get right till the root?

I'm not sure what a shield is. I'm able to get it right up to the lash line. Love this curler!

I'm worried about the sharp plastic edge,will this curler 'cut' my eyelashes at all?

It gives lashes a nice curl, and does NOT cut your lashes. Those people who say that this curler leaves a deep crease and crimps lashes at an acute angle, are simply pumping it too hard or too many times. Try applying as close to the lashline as possible, and using less pressure next time. Practice until you find just the right amount of pressure when squeezing. If you mess up by squeezing too hard and leave an ugly crimp, it's an EASY FIX... simply moisten your fingers just a tad and flatten your lashes out a bit, then leave as is, or start again, super easy! I use this curler more than my others, because the curls last longer, and I like the compact size for throwing in my purse!

YES. I ordered this product twice. The first time it broke within 2 months -using it maybe 3 times a week. I thought it was just a fluke so I ordered it again because it DOES work really well for me. Unfortunately, my second one broke, this time within 3 months. I am so torn between ordering another one because it works so well for me...but it's not worth paying for something that breaks so often. I don't even use it every day!!
