When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. The Evil Dead lacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness--but it is still much more than a gore movie. The limited edition has two discs (one blu-ray, one DVD extras). Very deceiving. Received it and found that it was a different version with a single disc. Quickly returned it after speaking to Amazon rep on the phone, and explaining their error. That was a year ago, and they are still going with that same deceptive and wrong picture of a totally different item. I love that a woman was violated by a tree. I love that a zombie stabbed a girl's ankle with a pencil. I love that Ashley keeps getting trapped under empty bookshelves that weigh 10 pounds. I love how people sit around the fire relaxing while a zombie is trapped in the cellar. I love the sounds made screaming zombies. Do I generally have no idea what is happening in this movie? Yes. It was put together by director Sam Rami and actor Bruce Campbell who had to scrape the money together to film it, and mostly used their friends and family as the crew.The film is about five friends who go up to a secluded cabin for the weekend and run into, you guessed it, nothing but evil. They immediately run into problems when Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) is taken over and draws a picture of a book with a face on it. Then a basement door pops open and they find an ancient book and a recorder. It turns out an archeologist had stayed at the cabin before and studied a Sumerian Book of the Dead. They begin listening to his recordings about his work which unleashes the demons contained within the book. They possess the forest, and eventually members of the group.For basically having no money Rami was able to create an amazing film. The trees attacking Cheryl for example was creepy and very original as well. The later effects look real cheesy based upon today’s standards but they give a real feel to the movie. Finally, who doesn’t love Bruce Campbell? There’s nothing of his smart ass comments that he became known for but you get his earliest acting job here.The bonus commentaries by Sam Rami and Bruce Campbell are great to watch after you’ve seen the whole things. The Campbell one is hilarious because his commentary gets to come out.
