IMPORTANT TOOL for every network engineer.
It's basic, but it's necessary, and it works VERY well. Can't tell what switchport a wall port goes to? Throw on loopback detection on every port, plug this thing in, BOOM! Port identified! WAY easier than toning out cables!

Only connect at 100 Mbps instead of 1Gbps
My usage for this loopback tester is to provide the etherent port a carrier so that the state will become "up". And not only that, but I also expect the connection speed to be 1 Gbps, as this is advertised. I tried this on 3 different Intel ethernet cards, I350, X540-AT2, and X722/577. The I350 supports 10/100/1000 speeds, but with this tester, it only connects at 100 Mbps. The other 2 cards are 10G BaseT, and won't connect at lower than 1 Gbps, so this tester failed to bring to port state to "up" on the latter 2 cards. BTW, I bought 2 of these, and both behave the same. This was disappointing as I also bought "CablesOnline 6-Pack 10/100 4-Pair Ethernet Green Loopback Plugs, TS-UL02-6" for $9.99, and they connect at 100 Mbps as advertised. So this tester costs me almost as much as those 6 10/100 Mbps plugs, but provides only the same connection speed. I would like the manufacturer to show how they designed/made the products to claim CAT5/1Gbps support that is different from those for 10/100 Mbps. And since they don't actually provide the speed I need, there seems to be no reason to pay 5 times more for this than to just get the CablesOnline 6-pack.

Still not entirely sure how it works.
I got no use out of this. I won't give it a bad review just for that, but it could be more clear as to what it does. I wanted to use it to test my home data jacks, but I guess it's really only made to test cables? I still don't get it.

As a Network Engineer/Admin, you need to keep these on hand (along with a T1 crossover if you deal with telephony). They just work and they're cheap. Never had an issue with these and I've ordered them time and time again for many applications.
