Very awesome. Not a bad price (still would have paid a little more and been happy, but always accepting of the price dropping as well). This was my first large purchase from Shars, and I really couldn't be more pleased. The backplate needs to be cut to fit the chuck, which is fine. It's cast iron and very good threading. The bolts to attach are a hair long, so I needed to cut them down about 1/4". The chuck itself is amazing. Has very little wiggle in any critical function. Very tight and accurate for my purposes (about .002 deviation with different sized stocks). I got this as a replacement for my south bend lathe. It's just a hair heavier than I would have liked (not a bad thing, just didn't quite think about it). When I used it, it felt a bit gritty, so I removed it, took it apart completely, and gave it a scrub. There was quite a lot of grit all over inside (the scroll gear had a LOT of compacted grit, the internals had a thick paste of grit mixed in the grease). I took a plastic brush and degreaser and really cleaned it out, applied new grease, put it back together (nice tight tolerances on internals) and now it's perfect. Really couldn't be happier. The jaws have two screws in them connecting them to the chuck, and they're on incredibly tight. Had to be careful removing them. And all threads are metric, FYI. Very good first impression for a larger purchace.

Great chuck for the money. Turned the back plate down only have a few 10ths of run-out, which I find very acceptable for a 1928 south bend lathe. Chuck it's nice and tight and operates as it should.

Works excellent. A lot easier to set up than a 4 jaw chuck.

I've been slowly shifting my purchases to Shars, I've yet to be disappointed. Could you buy VERY EXPENSIVE that's got higher tolerance...probably (though Shars DOES off the higher tolerance products) but for much of the home/hobbyist machine shops, this stuff is ideal. Was machining the CAST IRON back plate fun?..no.

The back plate did not fit the chuck. I turned about.137 in off of the backing plate to get it to fit. I thought that was not excusable. After I turned it properly it seems to work correctly. The enclosed inspection numbers could not have been obtained with that backplate.

Fit perfect on my old South Bend Lathe.Machined the face Plate as directed. Installed chuck and it measures at less than .002 off.I can live with that.

have old atlas metal lathe did not use it very much because old chuck would not center. With new chuck you sold me at very great price I wanted to be at lathe all the time. Out of scraps metal basket made 6 hammers gave them to sons and grandson gave me great pride and they seems to really like them. thank you very much. Please check your inventory I hade to machine back plate to fit chuck but was not a problem at all

Upgraded my old South Bend lathe and this was a perfect replacement. Very happy with the purchase.
