Fluval Quick-Clear Water Polishing Pads, 6-Pack

I use these in my modified Fluval Flex 9-gallon tank, and they’ve been fantastic. When I first set up my tank, the water was a bit cloudy. Being a bit of a perfectionist, I wanted to get it perfectly clear. After adding these pads to my setup (with a sponge filter as the first stage), the water became and stayed crystal clear. I replace the pads every month or two, and they keep the water looking great. If you’re looking for a way to keep your tank water clear and pristine, these pads are definitely worth trying.

I have not used these polishing pads and they were totally squished when they came in the mail, but they seem fine and affordable.

The Fluval 470 takes a lot of filters. You can rinse some of them out and re use them once or twice to save money, but either way the filters are an expense that most people didn't see coming for their aquarium. I tried buying generic foam aquarium pads and cutting them to fit in place of the polishing pads, but you can tell the difference between the generic aquarium pads and the polishing pad in the clarity of the water. I've concluded its worth it to buy these special and replace them each time I clean the tank.

Worked well

I have a Fluval 304 filter that I've been using with a 50 gallon freshwater tank for several years. The 304 has 4 filtration stages, the first being a coarse foam. The remaining 3 stages can be filled with products that work best for the aquarist's needs. In my case, I use charcoal, an ammonia remover, the Biomax Bio Rings, and these water polishing pads (in order from bottom to top.) Since the trays for each stage is divided, it's possible to fit both the charcoal and the ammonia remover in the first tray. I've been using this filter in this configuration for several years, and it's worked perfectly for my needs. Some may say that using standard aquarium floss or knock-off polishing pads are equivalent to those produced by Fluval, but I've not had that experience. These are sized and shaped specifically to fit in the filter, and water flowing through the unit does not push them to the side or bypass the floss. The Fluval products are definitely more expensive, but in my case, the fact that they work well consistently makes it worthwhile to spend a little extra.

I have been using Hagen/Fluval brand products for years, have tried many other brands due to out-of-stock issues and once in a while I wanted to try a product that was a bit cheaper. I have always learned my lesson the hard way, the other pads fall apart quickly, as they do not hold their shape at all and/or they just do not perform very well. 1. These Fluval pads are strong, they keep their structure without too much stray fibers breaking loose [you will always have some due to the materials used, pads that have been compressed during manufacturing process are much less likely to do this]. 2. These pads are durable, if you are caught without a replacement pad you can rinse these out with a garden hose. I do not recommend that you reuse pads, but if you must a hose sprayer will allow you to rinse the pad without the damage caused by hand scrubbing. 3. The pads are a little pricer than some other brands, but here you DO get what you pay for. I had purchased another brand of "filter wool" that comes compressed in a bag, while you get about 300% more material this way the product itself is garbage. I ended throwing it out after trying it in different ways; such as using it as a pre-filter pad, mechanical filtration, etc. But the material always falls apart as it is incapable of retaining any structural integrity.
