Dr Grabow Savoy Smooth Tobacco Pipe

I've owned and used this Dr. Grabow pipe now for over 4 years and it is a great smoking pipe, especially for the money. I bought it when I first started smoking pipe tobacco and didn't really know how to pack and light a pipe very well and it has stood up to all the abuse and still looks new and the inside of the bowl shows no signs of burnout or any damage. It is easy to pack, keep lot, and relatively easy to clean. I say relatively easy only because a pipe cleaner will not pass completely through the stem to the bowl which is my only complaint about this pipe and the only reason for four stars instead of five. Some people look down on a Dr. Grabow pipe because they perceive them as cheap garbage but don't listen to them. I own a couple high dollar Savinelli's and Butz-Choquin briars that I love, but I reach for my Dr. Grabow Savoy just as often as those because it smokes just as good. I also don't bother using the filters, I did when I first started smoking but soon abandoned them because they just funk up your pipe and don't add anything to the experience in my opinion. So in summary, I can't really think of a better pipe for the money...unless you look into Morgan Bones ;)

Best pipe for the money and made in America.

I ordered this pipe. It was nice and sturdy and I like the metal shank. I thought the bowl was small and the pipe over all was small. I returned it because it arrived about a week late due to a holiday mix up and has already acquired another. Seems like an overall nice pipe but I do not know how it smokes.

I received and have been smoking this pipe daily for a couple weeks now, and, the pipe itself is okay. I had a really disappointing experience with Exhale though. First of all, the Savoy ad from Exhale a couple weeks ago was completely different from this ad you see today. the ad then had different pictures, including two pictures of the Dr. Grabow pipe pouch, which I thought was nice, and part of the reason I made the purchase. There were also several negative reviews which have all been conveniently erased by exhale deleting that ad, and re-posting it, now with only 2 very flowery reviews. C'mon!!! Oh never mind, that practice speaks for itself. I wondered though how a merchant could have a perfect 5 star overall rating with thousands of reviewers? That is just impossible, a perfect 5 Stars thousands of times in a row......? One of the many reviewers from the original ad noted that silver band on his pipe (which is part of the metal mating insert) was HUGE, much bigger than pictured at about 3/8". The reviewer didn't dislike it, and opted to keep it, though noted the discrepancy as a friendly FYI for you and me. The pipe I received had no metal band at all, which I thought sucked and didn't make any sense, and I also DID NOT get the pipe pouch clearly advertised as part of the package, so I wrote exhale. The reply I got back was just ridiculous and snippy. First of all, they made it very clear right up front that they had no intention of helping me resolve the situation, stating, "Well excuse me if the pipe you got wasn't E-x-a-c-t-l-y as advertised" and immediately blamed the manufacturer for the inconsistencies and referred me to them. There was also a clear written understanding between us that I should just take what I get! No kidding, I have it in the email string, which Exhale did not/cannot refute. So if I buy a pair of Nike shoes directly from Amazon for example, and have a problem, Amazon wouldn't dream of sending me to Nike Corporate, They (the seller) FIX the problem! It's called customer service, something Amazon is actually very good at. Exhale also did not address or provide any answer at all about the missing pipe pouch, even when I wrote them back again a second time, they simply ignored it and did not respond. I am going to watch my review and see how long it stay's up. If it goes down, I will re-post... My advice, assuming Exhale isn't selling factory seconds, Dr. Grabow seems to be a fairly highly regarded product and you shouldn't hesitate buying one of their pipes, just shop another merchant. I just got this to see how I like pipes. This is probably the best pipe for the price. Im not sure what the filters actually accomplish, if it really matters. The pipe is quite small, and can get pretty hot if you are puffing hard. Very small bowl.

Three stars describes it well. It's "okay". It's a bit small and the quality isn't quite what I remember from past experiences. When I removed the stem it was a nice, snug fit. I replaced the stem and now it's noticeably looser. Could have just been that first unscrew that was tight. Not sure. All in all though, a solid pipe. Does what you'd expect a thirty dollar pipe to do. You could probably match this quality for a few bucks less, but it's hard to go wrong here. It's the basic go-between of a low quality item and an expensive pipe. It's not a Kia or a Bentley. It's a Ford. One last note - it did NOT come as the photo shows. There is not a ring between the bowl and the stem. So, that little piece of eye candy ain't happening...

Ok. So I ordered the Savoy Smooth Tobacco Pipe. When I open the package I find a rustic style pipe. (Rough channels engraved across the outside of the bowl) Nothing like the product pictured in the order. Other than that the pipe looks good and is well crafted. the bowl is narrow with a strange cone shaped bottom which makes getting the screen in the bottom quite tricky. It did come pre-conditioned with even charring throughout the inside of the bowl. The Filters seem cheesy to me. Its just rolled up paper with a small hole in the middle. The filter however did not affect the draw of the pipe. My first bowl smoked well all the way through. All things being equal this is a good pipe for the price and I would recommend this as a great starter pipe.
