Perfect Mini Mag UPDATE
NEW COMMENTS: When I don't sleep well, I have a short temper. I didn't sleep well, last night. So, when my LED Minimag didn't stay on, this morning; I lost my temper and slammed the flashlight against a desk, hard enough to dent the edge of the desk and scare my Lab out of a perfectly good squirrel dream. I decided to strip the flashlight for parts, and in the process I discovered that the battery compartment "cap" (on the butt end) was not tight. After tightening that cap, the flashlight worked like new. Here are two new comments about this product: 1. Make sure the end cap is screwed on tightly (but you already knew that). 2. Don't whack the flashlight against expensive furniture (it's bad for the furniture and scares dogs). Maglite, I apologize for doubting the durability of this little flashight; and I take back the nasty things I said when I thought mine had failed. This thing is TOUGH (just not idiot-proof)! ORIGINAL REVIEW: Love the gray color, size and light weight. I think this 2 cell puts out as bright a light as my 3 cell. I presume the batteries in the 3 cell might last a little longer, but it is an awkward size to carry on my belt. Anyway, this little 2 cell LED model is great! I don't remember the Amazon description saying anything about a selector "switch" that allows you to choose full power beam, reduced (battery saving) beam, steady flashing light, or a flashing SOS (3 shorts, 3 longs, 3 shorts). When I read that on the packaging, I couldn't find a "switch". Just by accident, I found that by turning the light off and back on changes the setting. The reduced beam is plenty bright for most needs and is supposed to extend the battery life significantly. I presume all these 2 cell LED Mini Mags have that feature, but maybe it was just mine. If they all DO have that feature, Amazon should surely say so, because it is a great selling point. I see some reviewers try to compare Maglites to other brands; but some of the other brands they mention cost triple what I paid for this little Mini Mag gem. In this price range, I don't think you can beat it. Buy several, because they make welcome gifts (just ask my daughter, ha).

Best $20 small flashlight ever!
What can one say about Maglite? Their the best! I have a full size Mag and several of the mini's. I love the Mini-Mag LED!!! FIrst off their as indestructable as a light is gonna come. Serious shock resistance... Serious water resistance... Not a hammer and not a diver's light but as close as the most of us will ever need. Secondly their weight is about right. Heavy enough to protect them but not so heavy that it can't be carried in a pack in the outdoors. Next up is the grip, it does have a nice checkered pattern etched into the shell that gives a good grip even with gloves or even when wet. Battery life always depends on usage but is about average for most AA lights. Like most LED's, bulb life is advertised as 100K hours. While I don't think it will last that long, it will make it long enough to make you feel it was a worthwile investment, and the bulb probably won't be what fails first anyway. Next lets talk about light...four-funtions of light! By twisting the bezel counter-clockwise it turns on the full power beam. Now it's not the brightest compact light in the world (that distiction goes to lithium powers tactical lights) but for a AA Alkaline powered light, it the brightest I've seen. Brighter infact than my 3AA powered Gerber TX3.0! I haven't done a distance comparison between them yet, but I can tell you that sitting in my chair in the woods camping, the Mini-Mag illuminates distances up to 30' like daylight! I'm not kidding! Distances up 50' can be seen pretty well assuming there isn't too much clutter to cast shadows. Also a big plus; unlike previous generations of Mini-Mag LED's, the bezel can adjusted to focus the beam. Finally turning it clockwise until it tightens and stops will turn off the light. Now that was one fuction... Turning the bezel couter-clockwise and then back off, then counter-clockwise (or on-off-on) within about 3 seconds will take you to mode #2...low power. According to the box it's about 25% power. I find it to be a great reading light, map light for the car, light to look in small spaces where too much power could "wash out" or blind your eyes. In fact I use it for navigation in total darkness. That way I'm not totally blind when I turn off my light. Next mode #3... (from off... on-off-on-off-on) It's a flasher that flashes at about 1 flash per second. Great for signaling! I speak from experence here. I had a family member lost after a hike that got past sundown. I hiked to a ridgetop right off the road then used this flasher to help them locate me. It worked! It's not a high speed strobe so it's not a defense tool, but as a locator signal, I give it a useful thumbs up! Finally mode #4... (from off... on-off-on-off-on-off-on) S.O.S. mode. I seriously doubt anyone of us will be so lost or standed that we'll be signaling passing planes and ships but hey I guess if you were... In all seriousness though if it's all you've got, it could help you be found by rescures or a passer-by. Consider this, a 100% truely dead car battery, meaning no 4-way flashers. It addition helping show that you need help with this almost universally recognized help signal, it also helps make your vehicle visible avoiding a potentially deadly accident. All in all, perhaps a little gimicky, perhaps not...it all depends on what you intend to do with your new light. One final word about the bezel switch. After about 3 to 5 seconds of sitting in either the off or on position, the next time the light is turned on it will return to full power output (AKA mode # 1). I'm not kidding when I say this is my favorite product I've ever reviewed! There's so many uses! And everyone has need of it, they may just not know it yet!

A solid flashlight that will work when you need it.
Solid no thrills flashlight. One twist for full power. Two twists for low power. Three twists for beacon. Four twists for sos mode. Reliable.

Good choice for the home or casual outdoor user
For the serious outdoor user who can budget for it, I'd recommend the Fenix LD25 Fenix LD25 Flashlight , which I also reviewed. In the under $30 LED market, the Maglite 2-AA Multi-Mode is a standout and it is within this class I'll rate the light. Kudos to Maglite for using ANSI specification standards. Their lumen ratings represent what the light actually delivers. Most others in this class use LED output...always significantly higher due to light lost in redirecting it out the front. It's a bit dishonest, but good for advertising. For outdoor use, the 69 lumen setting will satisfy most users. Although focusing is much more limited than older MiniMags, when focused, it provides good throw (distance viewing) and when "defocused" has adequate flood for close range. The lower setting (about 17 lumens) provides extended runtime, is adequate for many uses, and is better suited for most indoor use in providing less glare. Maglite made good compromise choices with these settings. In my opinion, for general home use, high lumen lights (100 lumen plus) make poor choices (except for possible bragging rights) unless a lower setting is available...Battery life is poor and they're really too bright for close-up use. Put into perspective: In the incandescent age, the old AA MiniMag put out about 7 lumens and the D-Cell about 20. Since the Multi-Mode is regulated, it will provide the lumens specified throughout most of the battery's life. With a non-regulated or direct drive like the old incandescents, as the batteries are used and voltage drops...so do the lumens. It's powered by a 3 watt Luxeon Rebel LED but not driven to its full potential. As checked with an ammeter and a set of freshly charged NiMH Eneloops at 2.6 volts, it pulled 430 mA on high. That equates to about 1.1 watts of power. At 3 watts the light would pull over 1100 mA and be much brighter but would require NiMH batteries for best performance. By reducing power, Maglite delivered good alkaline battery performance, extended runtime, and an output adequate for most needs. Beam color is "cool white". Its big minus is its lack of a "forward on" tactical switch to allow momentary on. Use of its "twist head" switch is well-covered elsewhere. It's an electronic switch that is manually turned on and then operates by breaking the electrical contact each time the head is twisted to change modes. You can do the same thing by twisting the tailcap if you want to be creative. However, this eliminates the ability to use an aftermarket tactical switch as you could with earlier MiniMag versions. You won't get momentary on, but instead will change modes. (Note to those troubled by the light accidently changing modes...make sure the tailcap is tight.) The advantages of a forward-on tactical switch are many...one handed operation, brief lighting, signaling, etc. There goes a 5 star rating as there are others in the class with it (but usually only with a single lumen setting...no 5 stars for them either). If Maglite only furnished two modes (high and low), allowed manual switching between them at the head and then utilized a forward-on tactical tailcap switch, they'd have a real 5 star winner. You could create strobe or SOS manually and wouldn't have the frustration of moving through those modes to switch settings. This is essentially the design of the Fenix E21 Fenix E21 Flashlight which is a much better interface. There is a workaround to avoid strobe and SOS. To go from high to low is a single twist. To go from low to high, turn the light off, wait about 3 seconds and turn it on. I suspect most users, including me, will find the strobe and SOS signals to be superfluous and a nuisance. However, since they can't be created manually, a case can be made for a dedicated setting in order to satisfy those wanting them. I prefer its 2-AA design over a 3-AAA such as the Maglite XL50 MAGLITE XL50-S3016 LED Flashlight, Black because it has about double the energy capacity...extending runtime and lowering battery cost. Also, I don't like the battery carriers a 3-AAA requires. I've had them break and they are difficult to load in the dark. It includes a holster, but it's about as basic as they come. It has no flap. This leaves the plastic lens unprotected and vulnerable to scratching. However, at least give Maglite credit for furnishing a holster... many others in this price range don't. For current incandescent owners, the Multi-Mode is an excellent choice for an upgrade. It's LED is more versatile, offers greatly increased runtime and is much brighter. For any purchaser, it's within most budgets, backed by a lifetime warranty (few are) and is about the only U.S. made flashlight left. In the price class (frequently less than $20 at Amazon), I can't name another light with the combined quality, versatility, and warranty it offers. If you don't find the "twist head" switch a deterrent, you'll rate it a 5 star and you've found your light.

Surprisingly bright
I buy mini mags to keep around the house and in cars. Got this red one to make it easier to find and wasn’t really looking at the lumens….this thing is crazy bright for the price. And it’s not just a small hot spot of light like some flashlights have so they can claim a certain number of lumens on their box, it’s a large circumstance of useable bright light both near and far. Wasn’t expecting the amount of light this thing puts out, super happy with the purchase. Plus it’s still made in the USA.

Light, portable and versatile
I use this mostly as an emergency flashlight for hotel stays, flights, etc... when I'm travelling internationally. It's a fine, portable, reliable little light. I've read some of the relatively few complaints here and can't relate to them. First, mine contains the lanyard hole in the tail cap if you want to run some string through it. As for the modes changing indiscriminately when the battery runs down... well, that indicates the battery needs to be changed (and why would it be a problem for the user to know that instead of discovering a dead battery?) I like the five modes (bright / power save / flash / SOS / candle) but only use the first two. The candle mode, however, was helpful recently when I was seated at a waterside hotel bar one evening with insufficient light to read my newspaper. (You remove the lighted end to expose the LED bulb, use the lens end facing down as a stand, and stick the bottom end of the flashlight into it so the lighted end stands on its own.) This is a great little product (6-3/8 inches/16.25 cm end-to-end.) I keep one in both of our cars and have a big LED Mag Lite as a general flashlight for the house. Well-made, well-designed, light, sturdy, reliable. No complaints.

Excellent
Well, here I am wring a review of a flashlight, giving you the idea that I have too much free time on my hands. But. This is a great flashlight. Not too big and not too little, although I was a little bit surprised about how big it was (they were) when I got it in the mail. But no free lunch. You want a bright light, which this is, in a fairly small package that you can carry around, then you need the bigger size for the batteries. It is VERY bright and in the dark if you flash it in the distance it works just like a big, powerful flashlight. Great. And about carrying it, fit comes with a very niche case for the belt. I live in Thailand and feed and help dogs in the night so people don't pay me too much attention and so I can hug the dogs. I put the flashlight in my mouth and use my two hands to help the dogs, for example checking for ticks in their ears. It is so bright. Speaking of that, I had to HUNT on the Internet for how to adjust the brightness. Here it is. Twist it open once for super bright, twist it closed and then open again quickly for not so bright (the dogs like this one better), and do it again and again for two other modes, SOS and flash on and off I think it is, but I never use them. If you would like to help us with the dogs, please visit DogAidThailand on Facebook. Sorry about asking for help, but we sure could use it. Enjoy this flashlight. I have a red and a black one (I put tape on the end--not the end end but toward the end of the flashlight where you put the batteries in) so it does not hurt my mouth)and I am going to try to get the blue one the next time someone flies to Thailand.

Pequeña y cómoda de llevar
Da la luz suficiente para trabajar en lugares oscuros o al anochecer. Aunque las hay de más lumenes, en mi caso la quería pequeña para llevar en la cazadora o mochila pequeña

Magnificent MAGLITE
Lost my MAGLITE of many years so there was no hesitation to buy another. Decided to upgrade to LED and this thing is a Lighting BEAST. Unbelievable light from such a small device. Quality beyond expectation. This will last me many years if I don't lose it...to a sailing crew member who keeps borrowing it...

Excelente lampara Maglite
