Very handy tool
I have not used any other commercial shelf pin jigs, so I can't compare, but this one works very well and it's so easy to use.Used it on a pantry I built and before long I had all my holes drilled, all in the right spots. I like how it works either against a piece or on the edge of.So simple to use. Set the stop collar on the drill bit, there is a gauge on the back of this jig to maker it easy. Put it where you want to put the holes and drill. Need more, just insert the index pin and move the jig to the next set. You could drill holes forever.Even though it's plastic, it seems to be very tough plastic. And with the metal insets for drilling the holes, this one is sure to last longer than me. It even comes with a connector to you can connector more than one jig.I also like how everything stores under the jig, well almost everything. There is a place to hole the drill bit and indexing pin. Only thing I could not find a spot for is the Allen key to tighten the stop collar on the drill bit. Did they forget? Not a biggie.Only thing I noticed, I did not get the cleanest holes. Don't know if it's the bit or the plywood, or both. Course that will be covered with the pins and shelves anyways.Sure you could make your own shelf pin hole jig, but why, for this price it's hardly worth your time making something from scratch.Very happy with my purchase, would buy again.

Highly recommended, Precise, durable, and accurate just like all of my other Kreg products.
What do I like? My shelves don't wobble; this Kreg jig is very accurate even over long runs of holes for my 8' high bookcases. A shelf installed in the top set of holes is just as solid as one installed in the bottom holes.I just completed a 6-section set of builtin bookcases for our family room. The cases are 8' high and the overall width is 15'. There are over 1500 shelf pin holes in the vertical sides to provide lots of flexibility of shelf spacing. For production efficiency, I machined all of the parts first, then did the assembly and installation. I originally drilled the holes using a Bench Dog shelf drilling jig, not this Kreg. The Bench Dog worked OK initially, but after completing all of the holes, I discovered that the spacing was imprecise because the spacing holes in the plastic Bench Dog jig elongated while I drilled the 1500 holes. It wasn't very visible on the jig, but it was enough to make the lower shelves wobbly. The problem with the Bench Dog design is that the collar on the drill bit rubs against the plastic holes with enough friction to melt the hole and allow it to expand. Note, it wasn't the flutes of the drill bit that made the holes larger, it was friction from the collar.I was able to shim some of the shelves on their pins to stop the wobble, but I bought the Kreg jig to remanufacture the final section. It works great. I specifically chose the Kreg because it has metal bushings in each guide hole that contact the spinning drill bit and this keeps the Kreg jig accurate. It was only slightly more expensive than the Bench Dog and the Kreg was the only shelf jig I could find with metal bushings. All the rest I found were plastic, and usually more expensive than the Kreg.Highly recommended.

Just bought and have already added lots of shelves! (SEE PHOTOS PLEASE)
Please see the customer photos that I uploaded (before and after of a cabinet that I'm using in my kitchen as a mini-pantry). Just got this jig yesterday and I've already added half a dozen shelves to some cabinets (with many more to go). This jig comes with a 1/4" bit, but I needed a 5mm bit, so I bought that at the same time. (NOTE, this jig works with BOTH the 1/4" AND 5mm bits -- you DON'T need to buy a separate 5mm jig!) I am not handy AT ALL, but I was able to understand the simple instructions on using this jig and was soon drilling lots of extra holes in unfinished pine cabinets (which I will paint in the next few months). The 5mm bit had no problems at all going through the pine (I imagine it would be slightly more difficult on hard wood), and I was able to keep the jig positioned without even using any clamps. The photos I uploaded are of a 36"-tall cabinet with 1 fixed shelf -- I was able to add 3 adjustable shelves to it, which will allow me to be so much more organized!! I have matching unfinished pine bookcase cabinets that came with 2 adjustable shelves but with very few holes, so I will be adding more holes to those as well. (I bought 1x10s and 1x12s at my local home center and had them cut to the width I needed, so I am able to add as many shelves as I want to these.)I've added shelf holes to bookcases before and it was a pain in the butt -- the measuring was incredibly tedious. This jig solves that problem. In fact I have been walking around my house today looking at all my bookcases and cabinets and thinking about how many more adjustable shelves I can add to them! This jig makes the process THAT simple!
